Liverpool transfer news: Calvin Ramsay completes loan move ahead of Anfield contract expiry

Calvin Ramsay’s time at Liverpool is quietly drawing to a close, with the defender embarking on a season-long loan move to St Mirren for the 2026/27 campaign ahead of the final year of his contract.

In a telling sign of where his long-term future lies, the 23-year-old right-back has not inked an extension before heading north of the border for the 2026/27 campaign. It’s a move that aligns with Liverpool’s familiar blueprint for players entering the final months of their deals—providing a platform for a fresh start elsewhere while clearing space on the books at Anfield.

With just a week to go until the transfer window slams shut, expect plenty of activity at Liverpool, both in terms of incomings and outgoings too. A fair few squad players who are surplus to requirements will leave the club this week, with Calvin Ramsay the first to go.

On Tuesday morning, it was confirmed that the 23 year old has joined Scottish Premiership side St Mirren on a season-long loan. However, given that Ramsay's Liverpool contract also expires in June 2027, this effectively signals the end of his career with the Reds.

Upon making the move to Paisley, this is what the right-back had to say:

"I feel really good, really excited. I’ve been in and trained and met all the boys, so yeah, I'm looking forward to it. I know the league and I wanted to come back up here and try and show what I can do and rebuild myself again. I feel like it's a good place to come. I want to try and perform, work as hard as I can and see where that takes me."

St Mirren won last season's Scottish League Cup, famously beating Celtic 3-1 at Hampden in December. However, after losing manager Stephen Robinson, they were almost relegated, with Craig McLeish's side surviving only by virtue of beating Partick Thistle 2-1 in the relegation play-off.

This time round, the Buddies have won two out of two in the Premiership, with Ramsay hoping to debut when Motherwell visit the catchily named Marbill Coaches Stadium on Sunday. As he heads back to Scotland, how will Ramsay be remembered by Liverpool fans?

Still only a teenager, having made just 39 senior appearances for Aberdeen, Liverpool paid £4.2 million to secure Ramsay's signature in 2022, a fee that could have risen to £6.5 million. However, this did not prove to be money well spent.

The Scotsman would go on to feature only four times for the Reds, enjoying very brief cameos off the bench against Napoli in the Champions League and Brighton in the FA Cup, as well as starting EFL Cup ties against Derby County and Crystal Palace. The fact he never played a single minute in the Premier League says it all.

Ramsay was though loaned out to Preston North End, Bolton Wanderers, Wigan Athletic and Kilmarnock, but none of these were able to kick-start his career. In fact, he made a total of just 26 appearances across these four loan spells, often due to persistent injury issues.

Thus, he just needs to find a home where he can play regular football again, something the 23 year old has not done for a very long time. His one and only senior Scotland cap came in a friendly against Türkiye, this a 2-1 defeat in Diyarbakır back in November 2022. Thus, he'll be hoping this move to St Mirren can help edge him towards being in new manager Sébastien Pocognoli's plans.

There are though encouraging signs for Ramsay. He featured regularly for Andoni Iraola during Liverpool's pre-season programme. The right-back appeared in five friendlies, assisting Federico Chiesa for a goal against Sunderland in Tennessee, before starting the 1-0 win over Wrexham in New York City.

He then played an hour of the behind-closed-doors friendly against Como at AXA Training Centre, but that will surely be the last time he is ever seen in the red of Liverpool. Despite Iraola's right-back conundrum, Conor Bradley still sidelined and Jeremie Frimpong still unconvincing, Ramsay was unable to force his way into the new head coach's plans. Thus, he departs having never made his mark at Anfield, which is a shame.
