Marc Guehi has had an outstanding year.

He was part of the England squad last year, playing six matches under former manager Gareth Southgate during the 2024 European Championships.

As captain of Crystal Palace this past season, he played a key role in the club's FA Cup run that culminated in a victory over Manchester City in the final.

As we know from the recent reports, Guehi has become a significant transfer target for Liverpool, especially following the reported departure of Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen and the uncertain future of Andy Robertson.

The London club is “poised to” approve his transfer this summer, with interest from several teams.

Led by chief executive Michael Edwards and sporting director Richard Hughes, Liverpool has the confidence and capacity to sign another top talent, following successful deals with Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong from Leverkusen.

Before Liverpool potentially signs Guehi at Anfield, let’s consider his playing style and the impact he could have on the Reds.

Guehi’s Playing Style and Attributes

Born in the Ivory Coast and raised at the Chelsea Academy for 12 years, Guehi joined Crystal Palace in 2021 and quickly became an important player for the team.

Last season, he started all 34 matches as captain, scoring three goals and providing two assists. He ranked second among defenders for goals scored during the last Premier League season.

Guehi is primarily a right-footed center-back capable of playing on either side of central defense.

Although his height (around 6 feet) is slightly below average for a centre-back, he demonstrated defensive solidity with an exceptional ability to win duels, ranking second for total duels won (168) on his team last season.

Additionally, Guehi has proven himself to be a capable player who can read the game quickly, both on and off the ball. With a strong game-reading instinct, Guehi is described as a modern defender, comfortable breaking lines with his passing and creating opportunities, aligning with Liverpool’s style under Arne Slot.

Last season, he produced the second-highest number of successful short (1352) and long (113) passes after his teammate Joachim Andersen.

Considering Liverpool lost Trent Alexander-Arnold, who possesses irreplaceable creativity with the ball, Guehi’s versatility and emerging leadership could significantly fill the gap left by the former vice-captain.

Pecking Order at Liverpool

If Liverpool signs Guehi, he would likely integrate as the top two or three in the center-back pecking order.

Virgil van Dijk’s position as the first choice is secure, but Guehi could compete directly with Ibrahima Konate or Robertson for the second starting spot.

Reports indicate Liverpool’s interest is strong, with a “significant offer” being prepared, and Guehi’s contract situation (entering the final year) could facilitate a deal, potentially around £40 million, given Crystal Palace’s interest in Ousmane Diomande as a replacement.

Guehi’s profile as a homegrown English international aligns with Liverpool’s needs. His ability to play in a high line and his recovery pace would fit Slot’s tactical setup, potentially making him a regular starter.

If Konate’s fitness or contract issues persist, Guehi could become the preferred partner for van Dijk. Otherwise, he might be a rock solid backup behind the current backline.
