Netherlands vs Germany match preview
Netherlands (Home side): It is the start of a new era for both the Netherlands and Germany, so which new boss will make a winning start in Amsterdam? For the first time since 1978, the Dutch have an overseas head coach. Following their exit in the round of 32 at the World Cup, Ronald Koeman was sacked and replaced by Barcelona legend Xavi.
Koeman was criticised for his cautious, defensive and frankly un-Dutch style of football, hence why the KNVB have turned to Xavi. His task is simply to make the Oranje serious contenders to win Euro 2028. Before then, Holland are aiming to reach the Nations League quarter-finals, needing to finish in the top two of this group to achieve this. With Serbia and Greece completing the quartet, they are favourites to do so, first seeking a victory over their biggest rivals on Thursday night.
Germany (Away team): Germany too are under new management, now led by a familiar face. After leaving Liverpool, Jürgen Klopp stated that there was only one coaching position he would ever consider taking. Well, following Germany's disastrous World Cup campaign saw Julian Nagelsmann given the boot, he has got it.
Die Nationalelf are at something of a low ebb, having won just one knockout match across the last five World Cups and Euros. Germany did reach the Nations League Finals for the very first time on home soil last time round, albeit ousted by Portugal in the semis in Munich. Thus, can Klopp guide die Mannschaft to a victory at Johan Cruijff Arena in his very first match in charge?
Netherlands team news
There are four Liverpool players in Xavi's maiden Netherlands squad. Virgil van Dijk will win his 97th cap, closing in on the milestone that is 100, a tally only ten Dutchmen have ever reached to date.
Ryan Gravenberch and Cody Gakpo are also guaranteed starters, while it would be a surprise of Jeremie Frimpong featured. Elsewhere, Matthijs de Ligt, Frenkie de Jong, Justin Kluivert, Donyell Malen and Xavi Simons all miss out due to injury.
Germany team news
Jürgen Klopp has named two seperate squads, one for Germany's first two matches, before almost an entirely new squad will replace them for the two games in October. Florian Wirtz is in the latter, so will not be up against his Liverpool team mates in Amsterdam.
The first squad does though feature captain Joshua Kimmich, winning his 115th cap; only six German men have more.
