Recent Form

Newcastle United (Home side): There's been a lot of change at their club this summer, try being a Newcastle United supporter. Four of the Magpies' star players have all departed, as has Eddie Howe, resigning on 31 July, despite having overseen three pre-season friendlies.

Thus, Matthias Jaissle is now the new man in charge in the North East. The 38 year old German won two Austrian Bundesliga titles in charge of RB Salzburg, as well as leading most-recently club Al-Ahli to back-to-back Asian Champions League triumphs. He is though very unproven at an elite level.

It is a new-look Newcastle, and it will be tough to forecast quite how strong they will be, both all season but also simply in this opening game. St James' Park though always produced a raucous atmosphere, especially when a big side come to town, meaning this will not be easy for Liverpool by any stretch of the imagination.

Liverpool (Away team): Liverpool fans come into this new campaign full of hope and optimism, most do so anyway, a feeling that will immediately be put to the test on Tyneside.

Last season's 20 defeats was the most the club have suffered in a single campaign, across all competitions, for 33 years, making it no surprise Arne Slot was sacked, following a feeble title defence. So now, Andoni Iraola is the new man in the Anfield hot seat, but has a pretty huge task on his hands.

The Reds' pre-season results were pretty mixed, relinquishing 2-0 leads as they were beaten by both Leeds United and Monaco; concerning signs. Meantime, Iraola's squad looks unbalanced and incomplete, with little over a week to go until the transfer deadline. For now, the new head coach must work with what he has got, so can he make a winning start to his tenure on Tyneside?

Newcastle United team news

Kieran Trippier, Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimarães have all departed this summer. Meantime, Joelinton is injured meaning, the XI that beat Liverpool in the EFL Cup Final just 17 months ago, none are forecast to start this one too.

Matthias Jaissle could have five new signings in his lineup. Lukáš Horníček is the new goalkeeper, while Amar Dedić, who arrived on Tuesday from Benfica, could be thrown straight in at right-back. Sean Steur and Aladji Bamba, who are 18 and 20 years old respectively, is the new midfield duo, while Bazoumana Touré is the man to watch. He scored five goals and recorded 12 assists in the Bundesliga last season, and is rapid.

Lastly, Jaissle deployed Yoane Wissa and Nick Woltemade together in a pre-season friendly against Bayer Leverkusen last weekend, so will he be that bold again?

Andoni Iraola is without Joe Gomez, who suffered a muscle injury during pre-season, while Conor Bradley and Giovanni Leoni are recovering from long-term injuries. Thus, we could see two new members of the back-line debut, namely Ronald Araújo at right-back and Jérémy Jacquet alongside Virgil van Dijk, after both new recruits featured against Como last Sunday.

Elsewhere, with Alexis Mac Allister not yet up to speed, Iraola will deploy a very attacking midfield trio featuring Dominik Szoboszlai as well as Florian Wirtz in the number ten role. Teenager Rio Ngumoha scored a famous last gasp winner at St James' Park almost exactly a year ago, and could start here, with Cody Gakpo and Víctor Muñoz the only other winger options at this moment in time.

Lastly, Alexander Isak should not expect a warm welcome back to Tyneside. 12 months ago, the Swede was on strike as he engineered a move out of Newcastle, and this will be the first time he has come up against the Toon Army who once adored him since departing.

Predicted Line-ups

  • Newcastle United predicted lineup: Horníček; Dedić, Thiaw, Botman, Hall; Steur, Bamba, Ramsey; Elanga, Touré, Woltemade.
  • Liverpool predicted lineup: Alisson; Araújo, Jacquet, van Dijk, Kerkez; Gravenberch, Szoboszlai, Wirtz; Ngumoha, Gakpo, Isak.

Managers have their say:

Matthias Jaissle (Newcastle): "I am excited. I cannot wait, first match at home, sold out, it will be an amazing privilege. Belief and consistency in the approach. How they support us. I am a big fan of what I have seen already and I will be a bigger fan when I see it on Sunday. All together, this is the biggest message for this season."

Andoni Iraola (Liverpool): "I think Matthias, we knew him from before but first game you over analyse everything. We don't have so many friendlies to reference but in the end it doesn't change the style too much. They will be strong in transitions, fast, physical, atmosphere will be strong, so not an easy to be playing first game. We have to be ready."

Score prediction: Newcastle United 2-2 Liverpool.
