Okay, maybe Liverpool is onto something. Maybe they don't need to sign a Luis Díaz replacement, since they already have one.

Yesterday, there was some pretty underwhelming news that Liverpool didn't plan to sign an external replacement for Luis Díaz. The Colombian winger then departed and officially signed for Bayern Munich this morning.

Instead of signing a replacement, Liverpool wanted to give Cody Gakpo more playing time, with youngster Rio Ngumoha providing backup and competition.

While it's exciting to see players increase their squad role, fans wanted a new face to come in. This was the consensus before Díaz was officially sold.

Rio Ngumoha is making an early case to replace Luis Díaz at Liverpool

Well, any fan who was disappointed by Rio Ngumoha in the pecking order to replace Luis Díaz might be slowly changing their minds. The Liverpool youngster is fresh off the back of a pretty decent pre-season runout.

Today, Liverpool beat Yokohama FM as part of their pre-season tour. On the scoreboard was new signing Florian Wirtz, Trey Nyoni and Rio Ngumoha.

There has been a lot of talk surrounding young Rio in recent weeks, so for him to solidify Liverpool's pre-season win in the dying embers of the match couldn't come at a better time.

Ngumoha plays with great confidence. Whenever he has the ball at his feet, there is a sense among the fanbase that something's about to happen. He's not afraid to run at the opposing full-backs, but unlike a lot of wingers his age, he also has the maturity to play the ball to his teammates when necessary.

Ngumoha's 87th-minute goal featured a great stride from the player himself, as he carried the ball a long distance, dropped his shoulder to beat a man and enter the box, before coolly curling the ball home.

The shot alone doesn't catch the eye, but it reached the back of the net. What was most impressive was Ngumoha's dribbling ability and intelligence to know the right action at the time, despite the opposing box being swarmed with players.

The X post from Liverpool, which highlighted Rio Ngumoha's individual brilliance, came just five hours after they announced Luis Díaz's departure.

Sure, he's a long way from matching Luis Díaz's reputation. It will take a good few years before any player can do that. However, Ngumoha is proving more and more that he should be at least involved in the conversation.

As the weeks go by, we only hope to see Ngumoha grow in confidence. He may have big boots to fill.
