Taking over from Jurgen Klopp is a job verging on the impossible. So loved is the German by Liverpool fans that they hang on his every word and barely question any decision.
It’s a love built on success, beautiful football and rebuilding the reputation of a club that was seen as a laughingstock through much of the 1990s and 2000s.
But rather than pandering to the Anfield faithful in the hope of winning them over early, incoming coach Arne Slot must do something that will anger the majority if he is to be successful and he must do it early. Arne Slot must do the unthinkable and insist that the club sell Mohamed Salah.
There is no doubting Salah’s legendary status at the club. He has given me moments as a fan that will forever be etched in my memory and there are legitimate arguments for him to labelled as the greatest ever Red.
But looking at the current version of Mo salah with those rose-tinted glasses will not do him or the incoming coach any favours.
The Mo Salah that is currently wearing the Number 11 shirt is not the same player that we saw two years ago.
The fear factor has gone, the goals have dried up and we can no longer rely on him as the focal point of the attack. Slot must find a new lynchpin of his attack.
It’s because of this that Slot must cash in sooner rather than later. Trying to build a successful team on Salah’s former glories simply will not work and will only lead to fan and dressing room rebellion along with embarrassment for Mo as he warms the bench as the new manager wrestles for respect.
Selling Salah will put out an instant statement. The new gaffer is here and he’s going to do things his way. It's a monumental task taking over for Klopp, so this type of decision would not be taken lightly.
There is enough talent there to carry the weight of a Mo Salah sale. And if we can get a decent price for his name then those funds can be reinvested as we build a team around the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Harvey Elliott.
It will be a bold move, for sure. But it’s one that I will fully support and one that will show Arne Slot has the balls to do the job.
