Four questions that Liverpool will answer this summer transfer window
By Evan Curnew
Q1. Will Liverpool keep Luis Diaz or let him go this summer?
Luis Diaz's father, Luis Manuel, made it clear this season in separate interviews that his son is a Barcelona fan and that Spanish clubs are "active in the market." Obviously, comments like this can be harmful to a player, especially if the club is not interested in selling.
Links to Spain and PSG have emerged, but to date, nothing is concrete or progressing towards a summer move. Diaz's eight goals and five assists this Premier League season are his highest total yet, which shouldn't come as a shock, as in his first full season at Liverpool, which was last season, he only played 17 matches.
No one should question Luis Diaz's effort level, with the Colombian winger always looking to be a difference-maker in the final third. Depending on who you ask, though, 13 goal contributions for a Liverpool starter is not enough for some. It would be in the club's best interests to keep Diaz, as any replacement coming in will not be a guaranteed upgrade in the attack.
Q2. Will Liverpool go big-game hunting in their search for a new wide player?
Liverpool are reportedly keen on signing a wide player this summer. However, it is yet to be known what that final shortlist of wide players may look like, with a range of players being linked to the club currently.
Crysencio Summerville of Leeds United was reportedly scouted multiple times by Liverpool this season in the Championship. Summerville could be a "project" option for the Reds because his potential is high, but there are fewer guarantees that the Dutch winger will be a top player right away.
On the flip side, the club has also been linked to Mohammed Kudus of West Ham United, who holds a release clause and Michael Olise of Crystal Palace. Either player would immediately be tasked with being a starter at the club and expected to contribute to the attack right away.
Looser links to Real Madrid's Rodrygo exist but that seems highly unrealistic at the time given the gargantuan price tag the Spanish giants would slap on the Brazilian winger.
Q3. Whose contracts will be extended this summer?
The contracts of veterans Adrian, Joel Matip and Thiago are unlikely to be renwed between now and June 30th. However, there are several key players whose contracts will expire the following year, in the summer of 2025.
Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah, and Trent Alexander-Arnold are among those. All three players look more likely than not to have their contracts extended, even though Salah's future at the club is often described as unclear. There is an outside chance the contracts of Andy Robertson and Ibrahima Konate will be extended, with both defenders being out of contract in 2026.
It is much easier for the club to engage in these negotiations over the summer when there is less focus on the first team, and ultimately, the players won't risk being distracted in-season over discussions of their contract.
Q4. Will Caoimhin Kelleher finally get his move to become a starter elsewhere?
The question of Kelleher moving on his from backup role with Liverpool seems like it has dragged on for awhile now. The 25-year-old Irishman could be poised for a summer move as he seeks to gain a starting place elsewhere in the Premier League.
He won't be displacing Alisson anytime soon, and with the Reds back in the Champions League, Kelleher won't be given the European group-stage games any longer. Somewhere such as Brentford, who will definitely be selling David Raya permanently to Arsenal, could be a realistic landing spot for Caoimhin Kelleher this summer. His contract expires in 2026, so the club does not have long before his future will really be under the microscope.
