Liverpool Round-up: Robertson & Jota injury updates, coach to depart and Alisson milestone
By Peter Lynch
Robertson and Jota injury updates for Liverpool v Wolves
Liverpool host Wolves on the final day of the Premier League season, with Anfield playing host to the clash on Sunday (19 May).
It is a dead rubber for both clubs, with the Reds having clinched third place and their opponents having secured a mid-table finish.
But it will be an important match given that it will be Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool farewell, meaning the manager will want to go out on a high. And that means selecting his strongest squad, but fitness concerns remain over many key players.
Joel Matip, Thiago Alcantara and Ben Doak are all long-term absentees and remain sidelined for this match, as does Bobby Clark following his season-ending injury.
But Andy Robertson could return to action after missing the Aston Villa clash due to a minor issue, with Diogo Jota also potentially making a comeback after being out of action for the last three weeks.
Reds coach lands major role
Klopp will exit in the summer, and he will be followed by his long-serving assistant Pepijn Lijnders, who will take up the role of head coach at Red Bull Salzburg.
The Dutchman has been announced as the Austrian Bundesliga club’s new boss.
He arrived at Anfield all the way back in 2014 as U16s coach, making the move up to first-team development coach a year later.
Lijnders originally worked under Brendan Rodgers before linking up with Klopp. His time on Merseyside was interrupted by a quick spell in charge of NEC Nijmegen in the Netherlands.
A return to Liverpool as assistant manager then took place ahead of the 2018/19 season. Lijnders will be joined in Austria by Vitor Matos as assistant coach, with the latter having spent four-and-a-half years as elite development coach at Anfield.
Liverpool star Alisson marks Premier League milestone
Young defender Jarell Quansah netted his first Premier League goal in the 3-3 draw against Aston Villa on Monday (13 May), in what was a milestone moment for the academy graduate.
But his goalkeeper and teammate Alisson Becker made his mark at the other end of the spectrum in the stalemate at Villa Park.
The Brazilian star made his 200th Premier League appearance, having been signed by Jurgen Klopp all the way back in the summer of 2018. The former Roma goalkeeper has been the undisputed Liverpool number one since then.
Alisson will be hugely disappointed to have conceded three goals at Villa Park, with clean sheets very hard to come by for the Reds in recent times.
But the Brazil international again showed his importance between the sticks, with one stunning save from Moussa Diaby particularly standing out at Villa Park.
