Alexis Mac Allister and Luis Diaz battled for the 2024 Copa America crown but only one would come out on top.

Late Sunday night in Miami, Florida there was a slugfest taking place that was masquerading as a football match. Argentina and Colombia were contesting a battle of wills in the 2024 Copa America Final.

Liverpool fans had a vested interest in this match as they were represented on both sides as Alexis Mac Allister played almost 100 minutes for Argentina while Luis Diaz was taken off with 15 minutes to go in extra time for Colombia.

No matter how it ended, we were going to see one of our own lift one of the biggest trophies in the world while the other would be left crestfallen.

Another major trophy for Macca

Mac Allister was not part of the Argentina side that won the 2021 Copa America as he had not yet truly burst onto the scene at that time.

However, a year later he would be playing an integral role for his nation as they went all the way in the 2022 World Cup and became World Champions. It was a meteoric rise for Macca at the time as he has only built from there following his move to Anfield to now.

Having missed out on the 2021 Copa triumph, Mac Allister will be over the moon to have played such a huge role in this tournament as well.

He is now a World Cup and Copa America winner and hopefully he can bring this winning feeling back to the club after he takes a well-deserved holiday.

During his time in North America, Macca started every match except the final group stage game when Argentina had already secured the top of the group crown. Per SofaScore his match ratings were: 7.7, 7.2, 7.4, 6.7 and 7.2 in sequential order.

Just the simple eye-test as well would show you that he played a key role in this side and he can be proud of his efforts that he put forth.

Heartbreak for Lucho

I would be remiss to not mention Luis Diaz here as he once again left his heart and soul on the pitch as he does every single time he steps foot on it.

His Colombia side had not lost a match in nearly 2 1/2 years prior to this Final so this will be a shock to the system, especially with a penalty shootout so close as well where anything can happen.

Lucho was not at his total best throughout this tournament but that does not mean he won't be crushed and it will be interesting to see if this lingers for him as he has had a long year personally as well.

The transfer rumors have been swirling around him for awhile now and with the summer competitions now wrapped, it will only amplify over the next few weeks.

In the end it was Mac Allister that lifted the trophy for his nation and he will remember it forever.
