Looking back at Liverpool's last 5 matches with Wolves
Liverpool and Wolves have become quite familiar with each other over the last 15 months as Sunday's season finale will be their sixth meeting in all comps since January of last year.
The Reds have gotten the better of their counterparts in the majority of those meetings but as we have seen recently, that is no guarantee of success this time around.
Let's jump right into the recent history of this matchup.
Sep. 16, 2023 - Premier League - Liverpool 3 Wolves1
We begin our list with the match from Matchday 5 of this Premier League season. The attacking trio to begin the match was Diogo Jota-Cody Gakpo-Mohamed Salah.
We had Quansah making one of his first appearances alongside Joel Matip as Virgil van Dijk was serving a suspension. This was actually a tight affair as goals from Hee-Chan Hwang and Gakpo canceled each other out.
It looked for a long time like the points would be shared until Andy Robertson laced home an 85th minute goal that would turn out to be the winner.
Liverpool would get their third via an own-goal deflection as Harvey Elliott took his chances from long range. The Reds dominated the ball with 66% possession and created four times as many big chances.
Mar. 1, 2023 - Premier League - Liverpool 2 Wolves 0
This was another match that was not complete one-way traffic as Wolves battled Liverpool hard all day long. While Liverpool outshot them 15-4, they were unable to break through.
Darwin Nunez would have a goal ruled out by VAR in the 67th minute before van Dijk would finally put the Reds in front with a close range header. Salah would add another just moments later and Liverpool got the win.
The midfield three for Jurgen Klopp on this day was Elliott, Fabinho and Stefan Bajcetic. They controlled the middle of the park on this occasion.
Feb. 4, 2023 - Premier League - Wolves 3 Liverpool 0
This was not a good outing for Liverpool as they were overrun from the beginning. An early Joel Matip own goal set the tone for what would turn into a miserable day for the Reds.
Craig Dawson and Ruben Neves would add goals for Wolves as this one got ugly. The likes of Thiago and Naby Keita could not create any magic from the midfield and despite Liverpool having 22 shots, only four were on target.
Wolves created 6 big chances for themselves to only 1 for Liverpool. This came during a very rough stretch of games for Klopp's men when things were the most bleak during this season.
Wanderers also had an astounding 39 clearances in this match as well showing they had the fighting spirit we did not on the day.
Jan. 17, 2023 - FA Cup 3rd Round Replay - Liverpool 1 Wolves 0
This was the replay of the next match on this list but we will get there. Klopp started a very weakened side for this game as we saw Fabio Carvalho, Bajcetic, Kostas Tsimikas and James Milner wearing the armband.
Having said that, they still gutted out a victory behind a beauty of a long range effort from Harvey Elliott.
It was a moment befitting of the Cup as it would prove enough to see the Reds through to the next round despite only having 42% of the ball and being outshot 11-7.
Jan. 7, 2023 - FA Cup 3rd Round - Liverpool 2 Wolves 2
This was a proper cup tie as both teams came out swinging and playing on the front foot. Wolves went ahead through Goncalo Guedes before Nunez equalized for Liverpool from a Trent Alexander-Arnold assist.
Salah would then put the Reds ahead but it would prove to be moot as Hwang struck the leveler in the 66th minute.
The Reds dominated the ball having 64% of it, but Wanderers were very deadly on the counter and had Liverpool scrambling more than once. Wolves were the more physical team on the night as well as they won 5 more aerial duels and 11 more total duels.
The match would end in a draw forcing the aforementioned replay that saw Elliott will Liverpool onward.
