Tactical Preview: Liverpool vs. Ipswich Town

With the season opener just a few hours away, how can we expect the Reds to play in their first regular season match under Arne Slot?

The Reds have been off to a solid start in their preseason friendlies so far, with four wins and one draw.

Arne Slot has definitely had some interesting changes to our former tactical approach, but how does this new style of play affect our odds against Ipswich this weekend, and for the season to come under new management?

One of the biggest new introductions into Slot's personal style is a touch of chaos in given set piece routines.

In the game against Arsenal where the Reds emerged victorious 2-0 on July 31st, Slot used an incredibly chaotic approach to an offensive corner kick where the players grouped up together, then quickly dispersed in separate directions, causing mass confusion among the defenders,

This type of unorthodox, chaotic play couple make a big impact against a very aggressive Ipswich side.

As they've recently come up from promotion, Ipswich have a lot to prove, so it wouldn't be surprising if they employed a similar tactic as Luton Town did last season, aggressive pressing and counter attacking long balls through.

The approach for the Reds should be similar in that sense, but Liverpool must continue to dominate the passing and possession game in the midfield to do so.

Ipswich recorded 92 goals in the Championship last season, which was the most in the league being 3 above Leicester's 89.

The defensive presence of Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate will be instrumental in shutting down their quick counter-attacks and building up play through the midfield.

My starting lineup for the midfield 3 would be Wataru Endo, Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai, with Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez, and Cody Gakpo up front.

After recent performances in the Euros, I would expect to see a lot more of Cody Gakpo on the left wing this season, as he could be a key player on attack. He looks primed to have his best season yet at Anfield if given the proper opportunities.

While Ipswich are heavily considered underdogs for this match, they must be treated with the same level of respect as any other Premier League side to get us off to a strong start with a win.

Gaining momentum will be crucial for Slot's first few games in the Premier League, and I see no better place to start than Ipswich on Matchday One in the Premier League. Tune into the game Saturday, August 17th, at 7:30AM EST.
