What does a successful Transfer Window look like for Liverpool?

It has been a quiet summer on the transfer front for Liverpool thus far, but what would make it a success when it's all over?

As it stands Liverpool are the only team in the Premier League not to sign a single senior player as of this writing.

It is safe to say that when it comes to transfer dealings there is no team that comes close to the efficiency of Liverpool. The Liverpool transfer process is a very tight ship and it's very rare to see substantial rumours.

This summer there were also international tournaments not only in Europe but South America too.

With players busy representing their countries the transfer market was always going to be a slow burner.

As far as Liverpool is concerned, this narrative feeds into the fact that a large part of the squad would be late returning to pre-season training.

Newly appointed manager Arne Slot would want to take a good look at what he already has at his disposal before making a decision on which players to sign.

Major or Minor Surgery?

Slot himself confirmed that he has inherited a fantastic squad from Klopp. The major surgery occurred last summer especially with the midfield being completely revamped.

It would be fair to say that this summer requires minor surgery. The club can focus on the nice to haves rather than the imperatives.

The nice-to-haves are the young players that could replace the ageing players over the longer term.

However Liverpool is already blessed in that department too. There is the emerging Jarell Quansah who could be the long term replacement for Virgil van Dijk. It is probably a viable reason why Liverpool didn’t follow up their interest in Leny Yoro.

Purely from a numbers perspective with Joel Matip and Thiago leaving it would seem logical to replace those bodies with other bodies in their respective positions.

Again, Slot would want to take a look at Tyler Morton and the Academy in general before making that decision.

Even if the decision is made to go to the transfer market, Liverpool are in a position to look for value. There is no pressure to overpay.

Squad Balance

There is always the threat of a Real Madrid or a Barcelona coming in to hunt around for a South American player.

We have seen in the past the draw that the Spanish duo have for South American players. There are rumours of Luis Diaz wanting to leave and at the age of 27 it's an optimum time to cash in.

If that was to happen a replacement would need to come in to maintain the squad depth. However with that said we know that Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo can operate in that area.

The ideal scenario in this case would be an Anthony Gordon type playing coming in. He plays in the same position, has Premier League experience and is younger.

Nice to Have

Taking the above into consideration and where the squad is at the moment, I would like to see a competent No 6.

Someone who is athletic and can use the ball well. It is obvious that Liverpool wouldn’t go out and get a World Class established No. 6 because that is not "Moneyball".

This rules out players like Fabian Ruiz who had an outstanding Euro '24 or an Adrien Rabiot. It would be a No. 6 that would be identified by Richard Hughes’ team. There are links to Ederson of Atalanta or Gomes from Wolves.

The other position on the pitch that requires attention is Left-Back. Andy Robertson has been a great servant for the club but his age is catching up with him.

There are questions over his deputy Kostas Tsimikas but Slot may like the look of him and given a run of games he could turn out to be the number one in that position. If this is not the case another left back needs to come in.
