There has been plenty of talk about Liverpool reinforcing their attacking options this summer, but could a forward be on his way out of the club? The Reds are currently in talks with Paris Saint-Germain as they seek to sign "top target" Bradley Barcola, with the Frenchman likely to cost at least £100 million. Having already signed Víctor Muñoz from Osasuna for £34.5 million, also a left-sided attacker, could Liverpool's current starter in that spot be squeezed out?
Well, rumours are circulating that Cody Gakpo could be on the move this summer. As reported Fabrizio Romano, speaking to Men in Blazers, Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing the Netherlands international. Romano stated the following:
"Keep an eye on Tottenham Hotspur and Cody Gakpo in the next weeks. They really like the player... this story.. completely depends on what Liverpool want to do. "Fabrizio Romano
Meantime, Alex Conrad of TalkSport asserts that, were Liverpool to sell, Anthony Gordon's £70 million move from Newcastle United to Barcelona would be cited as the benchmark. Elsewhere, a report by Samet Çayır of Turkish outlet Fanatik claims that Fenerbahçe approached Gakpo about a possible move to İstanbul, but this was immediately rejected. Nevertheless, he does also assert that the 27 year old is "expected to leave Liverpool", so could he be heading to Spurs?
Tottenham's need for attacking difference makers
Tottenham Hotspur have been the busiest elite-level club in the world during this transfer window thus far. Well, following back-to-back 17th place finishes, this should not be much of a surprise. So far this summer, Spurs have spent a combined £237 million on Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes and Jan Paul van Hecke, as well as bringing in Marcos Senesi, Martin Dúbravka and of course Andy Robertson from Liverpool on free transfers.
However, that merely improves the back half of Roberto De Zerbi's team, yet to make any attacking additions. With Xavi Simons having ruptured his Anterior Cruciate Ligament at Molineux in April, and Mohammed Kudus having not featured since 4 January due to a hamstring injury, Tottenham are certainly in the market for a wide-attacker.
Well, if Gakpo is going to be that recruit, Tottenham would have to pay top dollar for his signature, but that is something they have shown a willingness to do this summer, especially for Premier League proven players. Desperation to avoid another relegation battled has changed Spurs it seems.
Can Liverpool afford to let Cody Gakpo go?
Throughout the summer, Liverpool supporters have been desperate for their club to sign new forwards, so can they even countenance selling one of their most-reliable attackers? Since arriving in January 2023 for around £37 million, Gakpo has made 180 appearances for the Reds, scoring 50 goals and registering 23 assists, a respectable return.
Even last season, as Arne Slot's team endured a miserable title defence, he netted seven times in the Premier League and twice in the Champions League. Only the injured Hugo Ekitiké (17), midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai (13) and the departed Mohamed Salah (12) bagged more across all competitions.
Gakpo also won the hearts of millions of football fans, not just Liverpool supporters, during the World Cup. After scoring against Morocco in Monterrey during the Netherlands' round of 32 clash, he collapsed to the ground and burst into tears, consoled by his team mates, leaving most observes confused.

It later transpired that, just a few days earlier, his partner Noa van der Bij had heartbreakingly suffered a miscarriage while about six months pregnant with their unborn son Elijah Raphael Gakpo. This truly tragedy humanised Gakpo to all, in a way that is rare for modern-day footballers.
Now though, Liverpool fans and executive alike must debate whether or not to sell Gakpo to a Premier League rival, a mere three or so weeks later. With Muñoz signed and Barcola seemingly on his way, one could argue that Liverpool are well-stocked on the left-flank. This is not even to mention teenaged superstar in the making Rio Ngumoha. However, the Dutchman's versatility is surely something Andoni Iraola will be reluctant to let go.
Gakpo can operate at centre-forward, and may well be asked to do so, with Alexander Isak the only senior available option, given that Ekitkié is forecast to miss the entire season due to the ACL rupture suffered against PSG in the Champions League in April. Also, following Salah's departure, the identity of the Reds' starting right-winger remains a mystery; Federico Chiesa and Harvey Elliott are probably not the calibre of options fans would expect. That said, with Liverpool looking to spend big again, were an enormous offer to come in from Tottenham for Gakpo, it may be one they cannot turn down.
