1. Sami Hyypia - £2.5 million
What a paltry fee to pay for a player that would become arguably one of the best central defenders in the club's history.
The Big Finn joined the Reds in early summer of 1999 and would go on to become a true club legend. He was a true leader on the pitch, very similar to what we have seen from Virgil van Dijk.
Big Sami did not get booked for 87 consecutive matches from early 2000 to the fall of 2001. Still astounding to read even today.
Hyypia did not need loads of pace to defend so well as he read the game better than most players ever could and as a result his positioning was hardly wrong. He became permanent Captain in 2002 and would lead the side more than admirably.

He was one of the better headers of the ball and he used his frame to perfection both on defense and in the opponents box.
He netted 35 goals for Liverpool which is a more than fair return from a centre-back. His partnerships with Henchoz and Jamie Carragher formed the foundation of Liverpool's success in the early 2000's.
His constant professionalism and availability meant he was the rock among crashing waves of football. As he aged, the likes of Daniel Agger and Martin Skrtel arrived to ultimately push him out.
8 trophies (Everything but the league), 464 appearances and countless perfect performances later meant his minuscule transfer fee from Willem II looks like the heist of the century. It was almost no price to pay for a genuine club icon.
