We are now almost on the doorstep of yet another chapter in the historic Liverpool-Manchester United rivalry book.
In recent years, there have been far more positive chapters for Liverpool as they have secured some famous victories, infamous if you were to talk to a United fan about the same result.
With that in mind, today, we are taking a trip back in time to relive one of our most outstanding wins over our fierce rivals, just like we did with the famous 2006 FA Cup Final. With that being said, let's take a look back to when Liverpool defeated United 7-0 in in the Spring of 2023.
The Buildup
Before these two rivals kicked off on March 5, 2023, United were sitting firmly in 3rd place while the Reds were battling to get back in the Top five at the time, as they were in 6th on 39 points behind Tottenham.
Anfield was charged up for this one, because of course they were. United were coming into this match riding a huge wave of confidence and momentum as they had scored two or more goals in 12 consecutive matches in all competitions.
Marcus Rashford had scored in five straight Premier League matches coming into this fixture in what turned out to be his peak form at Manchester United.
Jurgen Klopp had a big task on his hands to get his side fired up but Liverpool had two wins and a draw in the league coming in themselves as they tried to salvage their season.
The front three of Cody Gakpo-Darwin Nunez-Mohamed Salah will be very familiar to today, however, the midfield being anchored by Jordan Henderson and Fabinho is such a far cry from the dynamism we see today.
Gakpo opens the floodgates
It was a rather forgettable opening fist half once the action finally kicked off at Anfield. However, as Liverpool tried to push and press the visitors into making a mistake, they finally got their chance.
In the 43rd minute, Andy Robertson, at this point camped in the United half, released the Dutchman with a perfectly weighted through-ball inside the right-back.
Gakpo, for his part, showcased terrific agility and quick thinking as he cut inside Raphael Varane before curling the ball into the bottom corner with supreme confidence. The move was sudden, and so close to halftime, seemingly took the wind out of United's sails.
It gave the home side a lot of energy and a jolt of belief they could get a special result on the day, which as it turns out, they would do just that.
Liverpool off to the Races
Things really began rolling once LFC secured their second goal, through Darwin Nunez. It was a ruthless counterattack that caught United on their heels when Harvey Elliott, pressing high, intercepted a wayward Luke Shaw pass and almost in one motion put the ball in for Nunez.
It happened in the blink of an eye, and at the time, you truly felt like the match was already won, but that clearly did not stop Liverpool on the day.
Two more goals from Gakpo and Mohamed Salah each, had the evening turned into a party as it was dreamland for a Reds team that had not hit the vast heights of previous seasons.
A second Nunez goal had the fans delirious as there was seemingly no end to the goal bonanza. This was true, because in the 83rd minute, Salah got to work again.
He took a pass on the right wing and showed off his fancy footwork to sit-down the defender before cutting inside and putting it away in the bottom corner with a driven effort. This goal also put him beyond Robbie Fowler for most Premier League goals in Liverpool history at 128.
Some flashy and cheeky Roberto Firmino brilliance late on put a cherry on the magnificent Liverpool display.
This performance outweighed the 9-0 win over Bournemouth in the fall of that season because of the opposition and importance of the fixture.
The Aftermath
This was Manchester United's worst defeat since a 7-0 loss at Wolverhampton Wanderers in League Division Two in the early 1930's.
On the flip side, it was Liverpool's biggest-ever win against their hated rivals, making it all the sweeter when you looked at the totality of the match.
Unfortunately, it did not spur the Reds on to great things in the Premier League as they would still finish that season in 5th in the league while United secured 3rd.
As it turned out, this would be the final time Henderson would skipper Liverpool in this historic fixture and it was also Fabinho's last time playing Manchester United as both players would depart Merseyside the ensuing summer for Saudi Arabia.
It might not have changed the overall outlook on a frustrating campaign, but the 7-0 demolition job of our greatest rival certainly gave us something to hold onto going forward. To this day, it still brings a smile to my face when I think about it, especially the reaction in the booth of Gary Neville on commentary.
