Curtis Jones' departure from Liverpool has now been confirmed. The 25 year old has joined Serie A champions Inter Milan for around £30 million, so how should fans feel? Well, some supporters believe this is a great deal, generating a pretty decent fee for a player who never truly established himself as a key starter at any point.

Others though are sad to see the departure of a homegrown player. Jones joined the club, his club, at the age of nine, making 228 senior appearances, living every Liverpool fans' dream. Now though, his 16-year association with the Reds is over, unlikely to debut when the Nerazzurri welcome Monza to Stadio Giuseppe Meazza on Saturday, but expected to be in attendance.

His departure though has symbolic significance for Liverpool. As noted by Michael Reid of Opta, the Reds have never gone through an entire Premier League campaign without a Scouser making an appearance. He adds that Curtis Jones is the only player to ever scorer for Liverpool whose name contains all the letters of Scouser, a unique achievement, but is going off on a bit of a tangent.

Selected Scousers to play for Liverpool in the Premier League

  • Trent Alexander-Arnold (2016-2025): Total appearances - 354.
  • Steven Gerrard (1998-2015): Total appearances - 710.
  • Jamie Carragher (1997-2013): Total appearances - 737.
  • Robbie Fowler (1993-2001 & 2006-2007): Total appearances - 369.
  • Steve McManaman (1990-1999): Total appearances - 364.

In the modern Premier League era, Steve McManaman, Steven Gerrard and Trent Alexander-Arnold pretty much have every season covered, ensuring there has always been a Scouser in the team. The one year between the latter duo, Jon Flanagan ensured the streak kept going.

All throughout history, Liverpool have maintained a proud tradition of having local players in the first team. Phil Thompson, Tommy Smith MBE, Steve McMahon, Terry McDermott, Ian Callaghan, John Aldridge and many more from the more distant past have grown up locally and become club icons.

So, with Jones following Alexander-Arnold out the exit door, who could keep the sequence going? Well, assuming no new Scousers are signed, it is pretty slim pickings. Youngsters Rio Ngumoha, Trey Nyoni and James McConnell are all from elsewhere in the UK.

Current fifth choice goalkeeper Harvey Davies is Liverpudlian, but highly unlikely to see any action, especially at Premier League level. 20 year old Jayden Danns is probably the best bet, having made ten senior appearance to date, scoring three goals, all in the FA Cup, notching a brace against Southampton before also netting against Accrington Stanley too.

This, obviously, is not a big deal. If Andoni Iraola delivers success at Liverpool, no one will really mind. Nevertheless, it is still a shame not to see a Scouser in the team, that is for sure.
