These 3 Liverpool players might be surplus to requirements sooner than later

Liverpool spent big in the last transfer window, which has pushed some of their current fringe players closer to the exit doors.

Liverpool spent a fortune in the summer transfer window. However, many of the moves have backfired. The big-money signings such as Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong, and Milos Kerkez have all underperformed at various stages.

Arne Slot received a lot of credit last season for winning the Premier League title with the squad he inherited from Jurgen Klopp. However, now that he has tried to build his own side, it has become a disaster.

Liverpool's loss to PSV Eindhoven this week was their third straight defeat by a three-goal margin.

There are currently 12th in the Premier League, which is unprecedented for a defending champion. As with any underachieving side, there will likely be a squad overhaul, with many players already on their way out.

These Liverpool players could be shown the door permanently sooner than later.

Harvey Elliott

Elliott was underused by Jurgen Klopp last season. This was despite the player contributing well when called upon.

He even scored the winner against Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of their Champions League tie in the Round of 16. However, PSG went on to turn things around and go on and win the trophy.

This season, Elliott has been sent on loan to Aston Villa. The attacking midfielder is surprisingly wearing the number nine shirt at Villa Park.

However, he has so far scored just once in seven appearances in all competitions. This came in a defeat to Brentford in the EFL Cup. He is yet to register an assist this campaign.

Elliott has not been involved in Villa's last four Premier League matchday squads. Albeit, one was against Liverpool, where he was not eligible.

The midfielder was on the bench as Unai Emery's side defeated BSC Young Boys in the Europa League on Thursday.

There is a reported obligation for Villa to sign Elliott permanently should he make a certain number of appearances for the club. This could be why Emery is limiting his game time, as the move has so far not worked out.

Given how bad Wirtz has been so far this season, Elliott may have gotten a chance in Slot's side.

He has failed to impress at Villa this season, so he will likely still be sold by Liverpool at the end of the season, even if Villa do not take him on a permanent basis.

Joe Gomez

Liverpool nearly sold Gomez to AC Milan over the summer. However, with the Reds failing to sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace, Gomez ended up staying.

Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate have been out of form, whilst Giovanni Leoni has been injured.

Despite this, Gomez has played just four times in the Premier League this season.

Gomez is a long-serving Liverpool player who joined the club back in 2015. He has a medal from every major domestic competition with the Reds.

However, he will not be remembered as a great due to his lack of game time for the club. With Guehi potentially joining the Reds at the end of the season, Gomez's time at the club could soon be up despite his contract running until 2027.

Federico Chiesa

Federico Chiesa has yet to make his mark at Liverpool since joining from Juventus last season.

He played in six Premier League matches a season ago, but failed to have any goal involvements. This season, he has made nine substitute appearances in the league, scored twice, and made one assist.

It was always going to be difficult for Chiesa to get regular playing time, as he is competing directly with Mohamed Salah for a starting spot.

He is contracted to Liverpool until 2028, but the 28-year-old should leave sooner to start playing regularly, which his talent warrants.
