Three takeaways from Liverpool's thrilling encounter with Newcastle
By Jack Davies
Liverpool were pegged back at the death by a resilient Newcastle United side late Wednesday following a truly entrhalling match.
It was a disapointing finish to what looked like another Arne Slot masterclass in terms of seceond half subsittuitions. Let's take a look at the biggest takeaways from the draw.
Defensive mistakes
Liverpool have been largely impenetrable this season, with Slot adding much needed steel at the back whilst retaining their fluid attacking football.
The opener was very avoidable. Liverpool's usually aggressive press went missing, Alexis Mac Allister dived in to take himself out of the game and Alexander Isak was far too easily found. The usually touch tight Virgil van Dijk allowed the dangerous Swede to fire and the ball flew past Kelleher.
The second was arguably even worse from the Reds. Another slack half press was passed through with ease and Isak was again allowed far too much space to find Gordon.
The former Evertonian easily side-stepped Gomez before sending a shot that Kelleher really should have kept out.
The third in the 90th minute summed up the defensive performance. A sloppy pass led to an avoidable concession of a free-kick and the Irish keeper will not want to see the result again.
The keeper opted to let a deep cross go and Fabian Schar was alive to somehow slide a finish in from the ridiculous angle.
Magnificent Mo
Liverpool fans and pundits alike have ran out of superlatives for Mohamed Salah. The Egyptian continues to break records as his special second half almost snatched three points.
He may have had a fairly quiet first half, but not for first time this season, had an imperious second. He started with his now trademark Trivela delivery, spinning a low cross for Curtis Jones to hammer home.
Not content with creating one equaliser, he then swept home Trent Alexander-Arnold's own low cross with an extremely clever finish on his weaker right foot.
Mo saved the best for last as he controlled another Trent delivery before controlling and spinning in one action before sending an unnerving finish into the far corner.
Salah also created a big chance for Cody Gakpo with a dipping deep cross and hit the woodwork after some individual skill, just before completing his brace.
Salah has now scored in 7 consecutive league games, scored or created 75% of Liverpool's goals and now leads the all time goals and assists in the same game record, with 37.
A point is still a point gained
Understandable doom and gloom with the highs of late, Liverpool fans will do well to remember a point away at a very raucous St James' Park is always a decent point.
A 7-point lead made be shorter than the 9 before the evening began, but it is one that would have been completely unbelievable if offered in August.
What will be key is the ability to bounce back but Liverpool face another tough away trip as they travel to Goodison Park for the last time ever in the Premier League.
