While Alexis Mac Allister continues to deliver masterclass performances on the pitch, uncertainty looms behind the scenes regarding his long-term future at Anfield.

The 27-year-old World Cup winner was in stellar form overnight, featuring for 70 minutes and grabbing an assist as Argentina thrashed Burkina Faso 7-0 in Buenos Aires.

That performance followed another assist against Bolivia three days earlier, bringing his recent tally to two goals and three assists across his last five starts for club and country.

Yet, despite his crucial role in maintaining structure and control in Liverpool's midfield, questions surrounding his contract situation have opened the door for rival suitors.

The contract dilemma brewing at Anfield

Mac Allister made his £35m move from Brighton in the summer of 2023, rapidly establishing himself as one of the shrewdest pieces of transfer business in modern Premier League history.

His versatility allowed him to anchor the midfield as a deep-lying pivot, drive forward as a roaming eight, or operate in advanced spaces, helping Liverpool recapture top-flight glory by winning their 20th Premier League title under former head coach Arne Slot

However, behind the scenes, tension has mounted over his financial terms. While midfield partners Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai recently secured lucrative contract extensions, Mac Allister has not been offered a fresh deal. Reports indicate the FIFA World Cup winner has made clear his frustrations at being left behind in negotiations, despite remaining central to the team's recent success.

Although his current contract runs until 2028, sporting director Julian Ward finds himself navigating a complex strategic landscape. Liverpool still retain strong leverage over the timeline, but allowing a peak-age asset to enter the final two years of his agreement without a resolution risks diminishing his market value or inviting unwanted transfer distractions.

Xabi Alonso eyes January raid

The situation has reportedly put Chelsea on high alert. The London club found themselves with a major hole after the closing stages of the summer transfer window when Enzo Fernandez completed a high-profile move to Manchester City.

Xabi Alonso, who took charge at Stamford Bridge earlier this year, remains eager to reconstruct his central midfield around a playmaker capable of dictating tempo. Mac Allister’s proven Premier League track record makes him an ideal fit for Alonso’s setup.

Reports state that Chelsea are actively preparing to test Liverpool's resolve as early as the January window:

"Chelsea have set their sights on a move to sign Liverpool star Alexis Mac Allister amid doubts about his long-term future," the report reads

"Xabi Alonso is determined to strengthen his midfield in January after failing to replace Enzo Fernandez when he made the big-money move to Man City on deadline day.

"Mac Allister is likely to be high on Chelsea's radar as a result, with his potential availability and frustration at Anfield likely placing them on high alert.

"A January move cannot be ruled out, with the Blues stepping up their efforts to strengthen in midfield and Mac Allister held in high regard by the club's hierarchy."

Spanish outlet Fichajes report that Chelsea could be willing to open formal bidding around the £70 million mark:

"Chelsea have identified Liverpool's 27-year-old midfielder Alexis Mac Allister as a top target for the summer transfer window," the report reads.

"Xabi Alonso's team is considering making a formal offer valued at 70 million pounds if the Merseyside club opens the door to his transfer, in a bidding war that also includes Real Madrid.

"Liverpool's transfer fee for the midfielder could rise to £80 million. This figure is based on the recent sale of Elliot Anderson to Manchester City for £116 million, raising the financial bar for negotiations with a direct Premier League rival."

What makes Mac Allister so indispensable?

While Mac Allister lacks the raw, explosive pace of modern box-to-box runners, his football intelligence makes him invaluable. He functions as Liverpool's anchor, excels at receiving the ball under extreme pressure, and consistently connects defensive phases to attacking lines.

Whether deployed as a No. 6, No. 8, or advanced creator, his positional discipline ensures that players like Szoboszlai and Gravenberch can push forward without exposing the backline. Losing a player of his maturity to a direct domestic rival like Chelsea would represent a major blow.

Real Madrid also remain attentive in the background, keeping tabs on the Argentine's availability in the event that contract talks at Anfield break down entirely.

With nearly two years remaining on his deal, Liverpool are under no immediate financial pressure to sell. However, modern football recruitment moves fast, and letting a World Cup-winning midfielder remain dissatisfied with his contract status is a risky game.

Julian Ward and the Liverpool hierarchy must decide whether to reward Mac Allister with terms that reflect his stature, or prepare for approaches when the transfer window opens in January.
