Liverpool Player Ratings: Defenders

Right Back. Liverpool. TRENT ALEXANDER-ARNOLD. 8. Clearly the plan to target the youngster early. He stood up well and kept his composure, helped slightly by Sane who rushed everything. The winger was visibly frustrated at the end, meaning a job well done for TAA. He was determined not to have a repeat of his performance against United. Overall an incredible showing from a 19-year-old playing in a Champions League quarter final.

Liverpool. DEJAN LOVREN. 9. Had a very solid game despite not much help from midfield on his side. One passage of play elicited cheers when he stretched to win a ball, brought it out, turned one City midfielder and laid it off to the right. Get this: he was probably the best central defender on the pitch tonight. Happy for him.. Center Back

Liverpool. VIRGIL VAN DIJK. 8. Virgil van Dijk was outplayed by Lovren today. That says more about Lovren’s showing than the Dutchman’s contribution. We have conceded 8 goals in the last two games against City. None tonight. That improvement is not totally down to van Dijk but he really makes everyone else around him better. That’s what top players do.. Center Back

The legend grows. Mohamed Salah is having the best debut season for Liverpool in my memory. Andy Robertson might be second. He was up against Kevin de Bruyne for the first 70 minutes and then Raheem Sterling. Neither got a sniff of a chance or an assist. Never seen a full back with this kind of engine. He has set the bar at a ridiculous level and is living up to it.. Left Back. Liverpool. ANDREW ROBERTSON. 9
