A top UK journalist doesn’t rate Arsenal’s defence at all as they prepare to face Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday afternoon.

Writing in the Independent, Jonathan Liew penned an article about Gunners’ manager Unai Emery and the tactics he likes his sides to use.

And it’s safe to say that Liew had a few things to say about the way Arsenal defends that should leave Reds fans licking their lips in anticipation of the afternoon clash.

The piece is excellent and well worth a read, even for those who aren’t fans of the London side. But the main points of interest for Liverpool supporters is when Liew labelled Saturday afternoon’s opposition as ‘half-baked’ in defence, before writing that they’ll be ‘tested to destruction’ by Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Xherdan Shaqiri.

Other noticeable lines included calling Emery’s assembled back four ‘unsettled’ before calling out his tactics against Brighton that left full-back Sead Kolasinac miles away from central defender Laurent Koscielny – which forced the latter into a messy clearance because of a lack of close options.

Koscielny is only just coming back from injury and this is definitely something that Liverpool can exploit – especially if the Frenchman is left isolated.

Salah should be licking his lips at the thought of being able to catch Kolasinac on the break, especially if Emery is going to persist with his high defensive line. The Spaniard likes to attack and his side do it well, but there are always going to be gaps on the break.

Arsenal are in the middle of a mini-injury crisis and no doubt that’s contributed towards that makeshift nature and muddled thinking, but Liverpool won’t care what’s caused it as long as they capitalise on it.
