Liverpool fans have trashed Manchester City’s Champions League team as they face Real Madrid tonight.

Pep Guardiola has chosen to leave Sergio Aguero, Fernandinho, David Silva and Raheem Sterling on the bench while Nicolas Otamendi was chosen to start in central defence.

This has lead to a few confused words on Twitter, with some fans accusing Guardiola of being a fraud, of giving up, of planning his exit from City when they get banned from the competition for a few years.

Real Madrid are massive opponents and you’d anticipate that a manager would pick their strongest side for the Champions League, especially when the Premier League is gone already.

Liverpool are already 22 points ahead of City in the league and those domestic ambitions are already dead. All they have left is the Carabao Cup, which nobody cares about, the FA Cup and Europe.

This season hasn’t been great for City, who keep on shooting themselves in the foot. They’ve been guilty of letting themselves slip over the course of the season, and perhaps the stress of Liverpool fighting them every inch of the way in 2018/2019 has taken it out of them physically and emotionally.

The Reds are still on course to win their second Champions League in a row, despite going down 1-0 to Atletico Madrid in Spain. Diego Simeone‘s side will have to get a result at Anfield if they want to progress to the next round, which is easier said than done.

Liverpool didn’t play well that night, but their front three and the energy from midfield should make sitting back and defending a lead extremely tough.

Madrid used the atmosphere inside their stadium to good effect, but you can sure the Anfield crowd will be on their backs every step of the way and that’ll make life difficult for them.
