Liverpool should treat the Carabao Cup as a priority over the Club World Cup when they split the squad in two during December.

The club has said they will field two separate teams as they play two games in two days on two different continents.

Liverpool play Aston Villa on the 17th December at 7:45pm and in Qatar on the 18th at 5:30pm in the Club World Cup semi-final. This sort of fixture congestion is unprecedented and comes during an already packed schedule.

There will certainly be one side chosen that features the stronger members of the squad, while a team made up of youth and second string players will play the other.

And Liverpool should pay more attention to the domestic competition, the Carabao Cup, than the Club World Cup.

The EFL have given a clue as to which direction the Reds will take with this issue. In their statement on the matter, they said the club had committed to playing a side that is broadly consistent with their selections already.

Sadly, this means we can expect a weak side full of youngsters and fringe players while the first team jet off to Qatar – that hotbed of football – to play in this strange competition.

Surely triumph in a domestic tournament should rank higher in Liverpool’s priorities then in this competition that barely flickers on the radar of fans.

The squad will also be put through another transcontinental flight for little reasons, surely it’s better to palm off that duty to the younger members of the squad and provide the senior players with better care at Liverpool.

These games come during December as well, which is always busy and always take its toll on the players. Focusing on the Carabao Cup could help reduce injury risk while providing the club with extra domestic silverware.
