Liverpool have moved on from Divock Origi.

It’s a tough thing to think about for some people, because they value all that the Belgian has brought to Merseyside.

There were crucial Champions League and Premier League goals along the way, but the brutal truth is that Jurgen Klopp no longer needs Divock Origi.

This was exposed during the 2-0 win over Danish side Midtjylland, in which the former Lille starlet started but failed to contribute much of note.

It was the 25-year-old’s third appearance of the season and his first since the Arsenal game on October 1st.  Until Tuesday, he’d sat on the bench or at home for every match since the defeat to the Gunners in the Carabao Cup.

Klopp no longer needs Origi like he used to, and we’re all going to have to digest that information.

Once our forward replacement were a weakness, now they’re a strength. Xherdan Shaqiri has started the season brightly. Diogo Jota has three goals already and Takumi Minamino will be given the time to prove he can be an effective top flight operator.

The Belgian was ineffective on Tuesday night and that can, and will, be put down to lack of match action. But with Shaqiri, Jota and Minamino ahead of him, the way to the first team looks very crowded and Origi is unlikely to ever build up a head of steam.

That means whenever he comes on, he’ll be fighting against the odds. We’ll always have the winners against Newcastle United, Tottenham and Barcelona, to name just a few, but those moments are fading with each poor touch or lost dual.

Selling Origi is like selling your favourite Pokemon card from when you were a kid. You have fond memories of it, but some things just outlive their uses.

It’s time to let the ineffective Origi out into the big bad world all by himself.
