Liverpool player ratings vs Midtjylland: The end of Origi, Williams is ready
Liverpool player ratings: Defenders
Trent Alexander-Arnold was back to something near his best for the Champions League game. His exchange with Shaqiri made the first goal, and he supplied the pass that put Salah into the area for the Egyptian to win the penalty.
Alexander-Arnold had a bit of a poor start to the game, but grew into the fixture and was never afraid to try things throughout the 90.
Another excellent performance from Joe Gomez, who has started to ease all our fears about how he was going to adapt to life without Virgil van Dijk. It’s now two Champions League clean sheets in a row for the Liverpool defence, and Gomez has been at the heart of that.
The England international was powerful in the air, and passed the ball well (when he kept things simple). Still, we can’t blame the lad for trying to spread play out from the back.
West Ham are up next, and on this form Gomez should dominate the Hammers’ forward line.
From the ‘best defender in the world’ against Ajax to limping off against Midtjylland, life on Merseyside comes at you fast. Fabinho was picked to play next to Gomez because Matip is still not available following his latest injury, but the Brazilian lasted just 30 minutes.
Williams replaced him and looked composed, while he also made one good interception in the second half. He’s a big unit, and that helps, but the youngster also appears to be decent on the ball and has looked the part so far.
There’ll be tougher tests ahead, not least West Ham this weekend, but it’s an encouraging start. On this basis, he looks ready.
Andy Robertson wasn’t able to get forward and supply too many crosses on Tuesday night as he was kept occupied in a more defensive role, which he carried out well.
Robbo is always going to give 100% and that’s exactly what happened as he put in a solid performance.
