Liverpool player ratings: Defenders

Trent Alexander-Arnold (6/10)

Alexander-Arnold could have done better for City’s goal as he should have got a little closer to Jesus, although the right-back did play well against Sterling for the most part.

His injury after 60 minutes is really concerning, however, and Klopp and the rest of us will be praying that he doesn’t have to miss too many games after the international break.

Joe Gomez (7/10)

Gave away the penalty but he couldn’t really do much about is as the new, draconian, handball law will claim many more victims before it’s overhauled. Gomez played his 100th game in English football and was largely solid, even if he couldn’t find the passing range that Virgil van Dijk possesses.

Joel Matip (7/10)

His body might be made of glass but his mind is robust as big Jo-El Matip put in a good performance in his first appearance since the Merseyside derby. His positioning was spot on as he cleared following Ali’s save from Sterling’s shot and had a good game overall.

Andy Robertson (6/10)

Robbo links up really well with Mane and gets down the left in a lovely manner. Once he got into that final third, however, his crossing was a little bit of a letdown and that brings down his overall player rating.

Robertson was solid at the back and his energy levels were high, as we’d expect from the glorious Scotsman.
