5 players who played for Liverpool and Everton
By Kian Long
The Merseyside derby is one of the fiercest rivalries in the world. Even despite the two Liverpool-based clubs being on different trajectories in recent history, the Everton vs Liverpool derby is one which always catches the eye.
Of course, the main reason why the two clubs hate each other is that the city of Liverpool is divided between red and blue. However, the rivalry has been built on and intensified due to cagey affairs in the past.
That said, there have been a handful of players who were brave enough to wear both colours at different points in their career. Therefore, here are the five most notable players who played for Liverpool and Everton.
5 players who played for Liverpool and Everton
Nick Barmby
A very attack-minded midfielder who played for a handful of English clubs, Nick Barmby made the controversial move from Goodison Park to Anfield in 2000. Despite only spending half the amount of time at Liverpool, Barmby achieved all of his success here.
Years at Everton: 1996-2000
Years at Liverpool: 2000-2002
Notable achievements: Barmby won the Football League Cup, FA Charity Shield and the UEFA Cup (now known as the Europa League) with Liverpool.
Don Hutchison
In many ways, Don Hutchison signfied everything the Merseyside derby is about - Technical prowess yes, but mainly the ability to put in a crunching tackle.. Unfortunately, signing for Liverpool as a youngster was not enough to stop him from joining Everton later in his career.
Years at Liverpool: 1991–1994
Years at Everton: 1998–2000
Notable achievements: Became a personal favourite of Liverpool manager at the time Graeme Souness.
Gary Ablett
Defender Gary Ablett came through the Liverpool youth academy and racked up over 100 appearances for the Reds. He even won the First Division twice for Liverpool, which made it hurt even more when he signed for Everton.
Years at Liverpool: 1985–1992
Years at Everton: 1992–1996
Notable achievements: With Liverpool, Ablett won the First Division twice, the FA Cup once and the FA Charity Shield three times. At Everton, Ablett won the FA Cup and the FA Charity Shield.
Sander Westerveld
We can somewhat forgive Sander Westerveld for signing for Everton, considering he was only on loan there. We assume he couldn't commit to wearing the horrid shirt for too long. Regardless, he played all across Europe and he is remembered fondly by most of the clubs he represented.
Years at Liverpool: 1999–2001
Years at Everton: 2006 (loan)
Notable achievements: Achieved all of his success at Liverpool, during a dominant Reds era. He won the FA Cup, UEFA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, Football League Cup and the FA Charity Shield.
Abel Xavier
Abel Xavier was never the type to conform to norms. Therefore, in hindsight, it is no surprise that he made the controversial switch from Everton to Liverpool. He was a tall player who stood out by using his strength and aggression on the pitch. Coming up against him, rival fans loved to hate him. That was the sign of a great player in his era.
Years at Everton: 1999–2002
Years at Liverpool: 2002-2003
Notable achievements: At Liverpool, the full-back lifed the Football League Cup.
