A look at some of the qualities rumored target Rayan Cherki could offer Liverpool
By Jack Davies
Lyon academy graduate Rayan Cherki is the latest name touted to be on the Arne Slot shortlist in January. The tricky winger is just twenty-one but has played over 150 times for the former French champions.
Fellow Football Manager aficionados will know of his expected potential as the Frenchman regularly features for top clubs and in big tournaments for his country.
Cherki is now fully developing as a player and looks ready to take his career to the next level.
Lyon would ordinarily be against selling a prized asset, but financial issues could see them part with a few key stars and Cherki represents a guaranteed profit if sold. Rumours have had the supposed fee at just under £30m pounds, which looks a bargain at any level.
The attacker has been described as the new Eden Hazard, with his deceitfully nimble footwork and quality in both feet.
He has forty-seven goal contributions for his boyhood club and is their youngest ever scorer at just sixteen years old.
Could he make the transition?
Dribbling qualities aside, there are question marks on the physical demands of the Premier League compared to Ligue 1, particularly in Arne Slot's dynamic tactical style.
English football is also very unforgivable and new signings often feel immense pressure to hit the ground running.
Another drawback of the potential signing is the depth Liverpool have in attacking positions. Summer arrival Federico Chiesa makes it at least six attackers, with players such as Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott also more than capable in those advanced roles.
In turn, many of Anfield's faithful feel other positions need to be prioritized, particularly if the budget would be significantly dented by the Frenchman.
Another midfielder, possibly a full-back at either side and even another centre-half are higher on most fans wish lists in January and the summer.
Liverpool also face competition for Cherki's signature, with clubs in England and other countries in Europe sniffing around the forward. Chelsea pose the greater threat back home with Borussia Dortmund, Paris Saint-Germain and Atletico Madrid reportedly also enquiring.
Overall, the potential signing has more pros than cons in my opinion, representing a relatively risk free transfer fee for a player with unlimited potential and terrific experience at such a young age.
Will Slot be tempted to take advantage, only time will tell, but he is a player worth monitoring in the coming weeks for Lyon.
