This is the final game of a campaign that has very much not gone to plan for Liverpool. 12 months ago, they proudly hoisted aloft a record-equalling 20th top-flight English title, hoping this would commence a period of domination.

In contrast, having now lost 20 matches across all competitions, including 12 in the Premier League, the Reds are down in fifth, still with work to do to ensure they are competing in next season's Champions League. So, can they improve the mood when Brentford visit Anfield on Sunday?

What Liverpool need to qualify for the Champions League

Erling Braut HÃ¥land's stoppage time equaliser by the South Coast on Tuesday, while it did little for Manchester City, could be a crucial goal for Liverpool. That's because, Bournemouth dropping two points right at the death substantially eased the pressure on Arne Slot's team.

Thus, a point for the Reds will cement a top five finish, also guaranteed to remain there if Andoni Iraola's team do not beat Nottingham Forest. There is a scenario where the season does not end here. If Liverpool lose 1-0 and Bournemouth win 5-0 at the City Ground, the duo would be level on points, goal difference, goals scored, head-to-head and head-to-head away goals scored. Thus, the duo would then need to meet in a one-off play-off at a neutral venue at some point next week.

This is certainly an unlikely eventuality, but not an impossible one. On the flip side, if Liverpool win and Aston Villa are beaten at Manchester City, who are waving goodbye to Pep Guardiola, sixth would become a Champions League spot too, which would be great news for Bournemouth.

Liverpool’s recent form before facing Brentford

Fair to say, all is not well at Liverpool right now. Last time out, nine days ago, the Reds were smashed 4-2 by Aston Villa, a scoreline that flattered the visitors to Villa Park. This leaves Slot's side without a win in three Premier League games, claiming victory from only three of nine since the start of March.

They last lost more league games than this in a campaign in 2011/12, finishing eighth under Kenny Dalglish. This has led to a growing sense that Slot should not remain in the role.

Brentford’s role in the Champions League race

Brentford could still qualify for Europe themselves. Keith Andrews' side are currently ninth, just below the Conference League spot. To snatch European football, the Bees must win on Merseyside and hope either Chelsea do not beat Sunderland or Brighton do not win against Manchester United.

The Bees have lost each of their last nine visits to Anfield, their most-recent victory there coming in 1937, but they will believe ending that streak is possible.

Key players who could decide the match

This will be a final Liverpool appearance for both Andy Robertson and Mohamed Salah, assuming the Egyptian is selected. Last weekend, Salah openly criticised Slot, demanding Liverpool return to "heavy metal football" used under Jügen Klopp, meaning Slot faces a real dilemma whether or not to pick him.

Salah has previously scored seven times in eight meetings with Brentford, scoring a spectacular strike in West London in the reverse fixtures, so will be hoping to sign off with another goal here.
