Somewhat lost in the end of the Jurgen Klopp era at Liverpool were the departures of a handful of other members of the coaching staff that had helped the German build the perfect culture at Anfield over the years.

One of those coaches, once potentially seen as a viable candidate to replace Klopp on the Liverpool touchline, has had a rollercoaster 12 months since that time.

Pep Lijnders was the No. 2 to Klopp and would step in whenever the head man was not available or able to lead from the touchline.

RB Salzburg chance

Lijnders accepted the Head Coach role for Austrian Bundesliga juggernaut, Red Bull Salzburg. The same club that had produced the likes of Sadio Mane among other players.

He brought two of the Reds' brightest young midfield prospects in Bobby Clark and Stefan Bajcteic with him. It was seen as a natural step in his coaching career and the thought was he would be a smashing success.

As it happened, things did not go very well for Lijnders as he never truly got his philosophy implemented and the team struggled to match their normal high levels in Austria.

A mere 6 months later, following poor showings both domestically and in the Champions League, Lijnders was relieved of his duties in the middle of December.

He left his post with the club 10 points adrift of 1st and was going nowhere in Europe. It was not the happy ending many had envisioned for him.

A Surprising new Opportunity

If 12 months ago you said Pep Lijnders would be joining Pep Guardiola's staff at Manchester City, you would have been laughed out of the building.

Stunningly, news confirmed on Friday that Lijnders will indeed be a member of Guardiola's coaching staff at the Etihad as he makes a shock return to England, and to our bitter title rivals at that.

He spurned any chances of taking over the top spot at Norwich City in favor of making the move to Manchester.

The chance to work alongside the two best managers of a generation is a unique and rare feat that not many coaches can say the same of. It will be interesting to see if he has as big of a voice as he did under Klopp, or if he will take a more background role.

City are coming off of their worst overall season in years under Pep and the Spanish legend is looking to shake things up and bring in fresh perspectives to run down Liverpool.

What better way to do that then bringing in a man that knows the inner workings of the club, albeit under different management.
