Four Liverpool players who must start versus Arsenal

With the Reds coming off the back of a last-minute win against Newcastle, they return to Anfield to face Arsenal in the Premier League on Sunday.

With two wins on the board, Arne Slot already has a good idea of who constitutes his best eleven already.

It will be important though that he picks right as Arsenal offer a bigger and different threat than anyone Liverpool have faced so far.

Many Reds players have shown great promise in the early stages of the season, and will be hoping to continue that on an even bigger stage. These four must start against the Gunners.

Hugo Ekitike

The man you talk about most during a game but always seems to have the limelight stolen at the end.

Ekitike has starred in both of Liverpool’s matches against AFC Bournemouth and Newcastle United scoring two goals.

His build-up play as well as his lethal finishing has helped him to already cement his place in the team.

The 23-year-old has also shown amazing hold up play, particularly when Liverpool’s backline need a ‘get out of jail’ option.

This was taken away after he was withdrawn in the second half against Newcastle, and Liverpool’s performance arguably suffered because of it.

If Liverpool do pull off the transfer of Alexander Isak, he wouldn’t be ready to face Arsenal on Sunday, but Isak would look great being paraded round in a Liverpool shirt before the game.

Virgil van Dijk

Arguably the first name on the team sheet, Liverpool’s captain, Virgil van Dijk is so important to the team.

The 34-year-old is one of the best defenders in Liverpool’s history, and has been consistent for the past eight years.

These days, himself and Alisson Becker seem to be digging their teammates out of trouble on a regular basis.

Ibrahima Konate in particular has started the season looking out of sorts defensively, thus van Dijk has become even more important.

He will be marking Viktor Gyokeres for the first time in an Arsenal shirt, and we will see how he fares.

As long as he is fit, van Dijk will unquestionably play this match.

Mohamed Salah

From one Liverpool anchor we gave all of the money to, to another, Mo Salah is a true Liverpool legend.

Salah has not had the best start to the season so far, but we all know how capable he is.

The 33-year-old has got a goal and an assist in the season so far despite his poor performances.

Salah scored at the tail end of the Bournemouth game, and marked the moment with one of Diogo Jota’s celebrations.

The Egyptian also got the assist for Rio Ngumoha’s winner against Newcastle, playing the ball across the box that Dominik Szoboszlai dummied.

Salah will be looking to right some wrongs against Arsenal, and show the world that he is in for another huge goal scoring season.

Ryan Gravenberch

This could have easily been Alisson Becker or Dominik Szoboszlai, but after his performance against Newcastle, it is important to emphasise the importance of Gravenberch.

He played his first match of the season against Newcastle after his suspension for the Bournemouth game.

The 23-year-old was an important part of the side that won the game, especially with his long range goal.

Liverpool looked lost without the defensive stability of Gravenberch against AFC Bournemouth.

While Liverpool still conceded two against Newcastle, both goals came from set pieces and not as a result of being counter attacked, like against Bournemouth. ‘Grav’ helps with this.

He will be an important part of stopping a really good Arsenal midfield whether they are with or without the talented Martin Odegaard.
