Liverpool fans slam "Hideous" leaked Adidas 2027/28 away kit

There is always an undeniable sense of intrigue that surrounds a new Liverpool kit launch.

Whether it is the traditional, sacred shade of Anfield red or an ambitious, outer-city design reserved for domestic away trips and European midweek excursions, supporters are guaranteed to hold very strong opinions. In the modern era, where kit cycles move at a relentless pace, kit leaks have become far to common.

However, the latest early whispers surrounding Liverpool’s potential strip for the 2027/28 campaign have set social media alight for all the wrong reasons.

Kit design experts Footy Headlines have offered an early prediction regarding what Adidas might have in store for the Reds’ away strip next season.

While it is crucial to stress that this remains an early prediction based on initial leaked colour codes rather than a final official render, the proposed aesthetic has already ruffled plenty of feathers among the Liverpool supporters.

Pink trefoils and argyle prints

According to the early details, the proposed Adidas Liverpool 2027/28 away shirt will feature a predominantly black base marking a return to a dark away strip for the first time since Nike’s 2024/25 release.

However, it isn't the black foundation causing raised eyebrows. The standout element of the predicted design lies in its accents: the iconic Liverbird crest and the Adidas Trefoil logo are expected to be rendered in a vibrant, high-contrast pink.

To make matters even more confusing, the body and sleeves are tipped to incorporate a subtle grey argyle pattern a diamond knit structure traditionally associated with classic golf apparel and heritage knitwear rather than Premier League football.

Flashbacks to 2020/21 and fan backlash

For many supporters, the concept instantly conjures up memories of recent controversial away designs. Indeed, Liverpool fans will recall the 2020/21 season under Nike, when the club rolled out an abstract, teal and black patterned away jersey inspired by the Shankly Gates. 

While that kit divide opinion at the time, this latest argyle projection seems to have united a large portion of the fan base in instant horror.

Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to react to the mockups, Kopites pull few punches regarding the prospective design.

One supporter bluntly declared: "That's disgusting"

Another fan, @AbuFulan38122, simply labelled the concept: "Hideous"

Meanwhile, supporter @keron0404 immediately picked up on the retrospective pattern feel, commenting: "20/21 vibes"

Others chose to take a more cynical view of how the retail reception might play out in the club store come launch day. User @MarkShep1976 joked:"That will be in the 50% off sale the day after it gets released"

A long way to go before official Release

It remains to be seen whether Adidas will indeed pursue the diamond pattern all the way to production. With the official launch of the 2027/28 away kit not scheduled until the summer of 2027, there is ample time for tweaks, revisions, or complete overhauls behind the scenes at sportswear headquarters.

History shows that early kit predictions often evolve significantly before players actually pull them on in the tunnel. But if this early reaction is anything to go by, Adidas executives might want to think twice before committing Liverpool's famous crest to an argyle sweater print.
