There is always a distinct, uncomfortable tension around Anfield when an academy graduate’s future hangs in the balance and even more so when that player happens to be the last remaining Scouser in the first-team squad.
Curtis Jones now stands at a defining career crossroads. After a summer filled with persistent speculation, Inter Milan’s long-running pursuit of the 25-year-old midfielder is rapidly approaching a decisive conclusion.
For months, Liverpool have maintained a firm stance, positioning themselves as reluctant sellers. However, with the midfielder entering the final year of his contract and finding guaranteed starting spots hard to come by, the landscape on Merseyside is shifting.
What began as an ambitious Italian inquiry is turning into a genuine transfer saga that could leave a noticeable void in Liverpool's midfield identity.
A breakthrough in negotiations?
Inter Milan have made no secret of their admiration for the 25-year-old keeping him at the very top of their midfield shortlist since May.
Yet, previous bids from the Serie A giants hit a brick wall, failing to meet Liverpool's strict valuation. Most recently, The Athletic’s reported via intermediaries that Inter were willing to pay €35 million (£29.9m). Up until now, Liverpool held out for €40 million (£34.2m) for their homegrown talent.
According to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, the Reds have softened their stance, bringing a compromise within reach.
“After several failed attempts, because Liverpool always asked for €40 million, Liverpool as far as I understand have slightly lowered their request,” Romano explained on YouTube.
“The feeling from those close to the operation is that Jones could be unlocked for around €35 million.
“And this is new, because in these types of deals even these small financial margins can make a difference.
“Inter are negotiating, working and they will make an offer in the coming hours.”
A £4.3 million concession is hardly a catastrophic loss on paper especially for a player who could walk away for free next summer. But for the Anfield faithful, watching a Toxteth-born lad depart for a modest financial adjustment leaves a bitter taste.
Eyebrows were inevitably raised over the weekend when Jones was left out of the squad for Liverpool’s 3-2 friendly defeat against Ligue 1 side AS Monaco. Reports insisted his absence was purely precautionary due to a minor physical issue.
Speaking to LFCTV after the final whistle, manager Andoni Iraola sought to downplay any major concerns regarding the midfielder's fitness:
“It doesn’t look anything big but it didn’t make any sense to risk,” Iraola stated.
While minor niggles in pre-season are common practice, the timing could not be ignored. With negotiations reaching a critical stage and Serie A calling, his omission only fueled the growing belief that Jones’s days in a red shirt are numbered.
The Frattesi domino effect
For Inter, securing Jones is not quite as simple as submitting a new bid. The Italian side, currently managed by Cristian Chivu, must first balance their books and clear squad space. According to reports in La Gazzetta dello Sport, the key domino is Italian international Davide Frattesi. Inter value Frattesi at roughly €25m–€30m, and his pending departure acts as the green light to officially sign Jones.
Chivu views Jones as the ideal addition to his tactical setup a midfielder possessing technical quality, energy, and the rare ability to receive possession under intense pressure.
Whether deployed as an attacking No. 8 or operating deeper in a dictating role, Jones offers the versatility Inter desperately crave.
From the player’s perspective, the move makes footballing sense. Jones enjoyed his most active campaign yet last season, racking up 49 appearances.
However, only 28 of those were starts. At 25, he wants and needs to be the central pillar of a midfield rather than a rotating option. That ambition previously drew interest from domestic rivals Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest, but a fresh start in Italy under Chivu’s system presents an alluring challenge.
Should the move materialise, the focus immediately shifts back to Liverpool's recruitment team.
The Reds were linked with Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton earlier in the window to bolster their engine room. Meanwhile, alternative targets have slipped off the board: Mamadou Sangare opted to join Brentford from Lens, and Monaco’s Lamine Camara is now firmly on Palace’s radar.
If this deal goes through, Liverpool must ensure the funds are reinvested wisely into a midfield capable of competing on all fronts.
