Liverpool's chances at signing Anthony Gordon could still be on.

Back in June 2024, Anthony Gordon's potential transfer to Liverpool was a hot topic. Gordon's club, Newcastle United, was in a financial pickle and needed to 'balance their books' to comply with the Premier League's profitability and sustainability rules. A transfer of Gordon to Liverpool would've balanced the Toons' books on his own, but ultimately, Newcastle found deals elsewhere.

Could Liverpool be back in the sweepstakes for Anthony Gordon this summer?

Simon Jones of Mail Sport reported earlier this week that a massive swap deal between Newcastle United and Liverpool broke down back in July. The deal would have seen Joe Gomez depart Anfield to join Newcastle for £45m and Gordon would have joined the Reds for £75m. Jones goes so far as to report that medicals were scheduled in Germany for the players, but Newcastle on June 30 were able to raise funds by selling different players.

Other reports suggest that Liverpool's interest in Anthony Gordon remains strong even after Newcastle United are no longer backed into a corner financially. With Liverpool yet to sign a wide forward, which is expected to happen this window, Gordon looks to be still among the internal discussions taking place at Liverpool.

Gordon only moved to Newcastle from Liverpool rivals Everton in the winter of 2023. Since then, the Liverpool-born winger has established himself as one of the better left-wingers in the Premier League. Gordon was a part of Gareth Southgate's Euro 2024 England squad that reached the final against Spain.

Will Newcastle still set a £75m transfer price tag on Anthony Gordon? The circumstances have changed, so there is no reason to believe that the Magpies won't ask for more. With Liverpool having spent zero pounds so far this summer, they do have their whole budget left, but it remains to be seen how big that budget actually is.
