Sofie Lundgaard completes Liverpool exit as German club seals permanent deal

Danish midfielder Sofie Lundgaard has departed Liverpool Women to join Frauen-Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt on a permanent deal for an undisclosed fee.

The 24-year-old’s three-and-a-half-year spell on Merseyside comes to an end after making 31 appearances for the Reds.

Lundgaard initially joined Liverpool in January 2023 from Fortuna Hjørring, where she had made 77 league appearances and scored 12 goals. She enjoyed a bright start to her career in England, featuring 31 times during her opening 18 months at the club.

Cruel injury luck

However, Lundgaard’s time on Merseyside was severely disrupted by the misfortune of suffering one anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury and a foot fracture. The set-backs restricted the midfielder to just 11 appearances across the past two campaigns.

Having worked her way back to fitness ahead of the 2025-26 season under head coach Gareth Taylor, game time remained limited. Lundgaard featured three times in the Women's Super League this season all from the substitute bench accumulating 67 minutes of action.

Her final appearance for Liverpool came on December 11, playing 30 minutes in a 3-0 defeat against Aston Villa.

A fresh chapter in Germany

Lundgaard now heads to Germany to begin a new chapter with Eintracht Frankfurt in the Frauen-Bundesliga.

Confirming the midfielder's departure, Liverpool Women released an official statement on their site:

"The midfielder’s three-and-a-half-year spell on Merseyside comes to a conclusion with the switch to Germany.

"Lundgaard joined the Reds in January 2023 and went on to make 31 appearances across her opening 18 months at the club.

"The misfortune of suffering two anterior cruciate ligament injuries meant the Dane was only able to feature 11 times during the past two campaigns.

"She now bids farewell to Liverpool to link up with Eintracht in the Frauen-Bundesliga.

"Everyone at LFC Women thanks Sofie for her contributions and wishes her the best for the future."

The 24-year-old also sent a message to supporters following her depature:

"Liverpool, my home away from home for the last 3.5 years

I never thought saying goodbye would be this hard, but I'm leaving with more than I ever could have imagined. I've created memories I'll carry with me forever, but most importantly, friendships for life. Ill always be so thankful for that.

Wearing the Liverpool badge has been a dream come true - something I'll forever be proud of!
Playing in front of all the fans has been so special. All the support has meant more than you know, and I will now be one of you too!"

Looking ahead

The move offers Lundgaard a crucial fresh start in one of Europe’s top domestic leagues after a frustrating period dominated by rehab and recovery. At just 24, the Dane still possesses immense potential and will look to re-establish herself as a focal point in Frankfurt’s midfield as they pursue domestic and European ambitions.

For Liverpool, the departure marks a natural transition as manager Gareth Taylor continues to reshape the squad ahead of the 2026/27 campaign. Lundgaard will hope her cruel luck with injuries is now firmly behind her as she begins this next chapter in Germany.
