Bordeaux score indirect free kick after Mignolet error

Simon Mignolet has made a lot of enemies in Liverpool after giving away a ridiculous indirect freekick that resulted in a goal for Bordeaux

Jurgen Klopp picked a very strong side for Liverpool’s crucial clash with Bordeaux this evening. A win for the Reds would see them go through to the round of 32, meaning the German manager played the likes of Benteke and Firmino to get the job done.

Some shocking and comical defending nearly lead to a Bordeaux goal early on, but some “creativity” from Lucas of all people in his own 6 yard box saved the home side’s blushes…for a moment at least.

Simon Mignolet who was nearly at fault for the previous Bordeaux chance seems to be on a one man mission to sabotage Liverpool’s Europa League campaign. The goalkeeper collected a routine ball and decided to hold on to it for over 20 seconds. This of course warrants an indirect free kick for the opposition, and Bordeaux played it beautifully.

You can’t argue with the referee for awarding the free kick, the rules dictate a keeper can’t hold on to the ball for longer than 6 seconds, so why the Belgian keeper felt that 20+ was okay is beyond me? Twitter didn’t take too kindly to his mistake either.

There have been several occasions where people have called for the Belgian to be replaced, but I think this mistake was so avoidable that it could be his worst in Liverpool colors. Let’s not jump to any conclusions though, people make mistakes and he often pulls off great games. Though these ridiculous mistakes have to cease if he is to become a top Liverpool keeper.
