Six goals, a clean sheet, two debut goals and a 100th appearance for a devoted captain. Liverpool Ladies FC got their Continental Cup campaign off to an electrifying start.

The clash against Sheffield Ladies took place at the Select Security Stadium on Wednesday night at 7pm. The sizzling 6-0 victory marked captain Gemma Bonner’s 100th appearance for her girlhood club.

Her teammates celebrated their skipper’s achievement as they bagged their first win of the campaign.

Bonner’s love for Liverpool has grown from a tot in an oversized kit to the team’s strong and influential captain. Both her passion and ability as a footballer is something Steven Gerrard would applaud. Congratulations, Gemma! Here’s to the next 100.

A strike force to be reckoned with

The Liverpool girls’ performance sealed a fantastic first result in the Continental Cup. The massive 6-0 margin featured debut goals for Alicia Johnson and Chelsea Ladies loanee Bethany England.

Caroline Weir had a particularly impressive game and the Scottish midfielder opened up the scoreline after just ten minutes.

More from Rush The Kop

Weir doubled the lead after she bagged her brace in the 29th minute. In her post-match interview, she praised the Reds’ attack and defence and claimed it was vital for the girls going forward. A solid team of eleven is something the ladies in red have that fellas are constantly struggling with. Time for a combined team meeting?

The montage of goals followed shortly after – the second half saw Liverpool slot another four past a frustrated Gibbons. And if the former Liverpool lady wasn’t having a hard enough evening, the third conceded goal was from the foot of her own defender.

Ellie Gilliatt couldn’t deal with the pressure of Alex Greenwood’s ball and converted into the back of her own net. When in threatening areas, Greenwood can be a lethal weapon – Sheffield were foolish to allow her into their danger zones.

Despite Gibbons’ six goal blow, she still sent former teammate Bonner a heartfelt congratulatory message. Once a Red, always a Red.

Liverpool FC share the same abilities going forward. The girls are just as hot on the attack as the lads – except maybe a bit more consistent. What do you think? Could our girls give Klopp’s men a masterclass?

More success to come

Despite the Reds’ 1-0 defeat against Chelsea in the Women’s Super League One, they came back with fire in their bellies. With a hunger to emerge back on the top, the ladies definitely delivered.

Ahead of their away clash against Sunderland on 28th October, Liverpool look charged and ready. Sunderland sit five places ahead of the Reds in third place but the girls can definitely deliver against the Northern side.

Next: This is the back four we want to see against Manchester United

After their joint celebrations from last night, it’s back to training hard for the girls. Let’s keep this win streak alive, up the Reds!
