The shocking Alberto Moreno performance last night against Seville proves that Liverpool still need to use and develop Andrew Robertson.

I am one of those who has been impressed by Alberto Moreno this season. My expectations were that Liverpool would sell him and if he stayed he would be a ‘break glass in case of emergency’ player.

Credit to him that he has been our most consistent defender and has rid himself of all the horrible errors that cost us points, games and trophies. Until last night.

Old Moreno came back with a bang. The calmness and confidence that has been prevalent in his game this season vanished as soon as Seville got a glimpse of a comeback. It remains to be seen how he responds from this game. However it is a sharp reminder to Jurgen Klopp of the depths to which the Spanish left back can descend if his head goes.

The immediate conclusion has to be that he cannot be our only regular option at left back. He has played more minutes in the Premier League than all outfield players except Mohamed Salah and been a fixture in the side.

Despite Moreno’s form many fans have been surprised that summer signing Andrew Robertson has not featured more. He has three first team appearances and has been impressive in them all. Moreno has deserved his number one status but Robertson has not been far behind him.

Bringing in the Scotsman has been a catalyst for Moreno’s improvementt but Klopp should not let the Spaniard slip into complacency. Keeping Robertson regularly involved helps keep both of them on their toes.

Klopp has now left Robertson out of more match day squads than he has included him. Not developing him more may come to haunt the manager if yesterday’s performance leads to a full regression for Moreno.

Squad rotation is not just about keeping players fresh. It is about creating a culture of merit, hard work and competitive focus. Liverpool certainly need more of that this season.
