Center Back: Joel Matip

Matip was very good last week against Manchester City. He dealt with the threat of Aguero and de Bruyne with ease. In no small part to the sterling work of the midfield in front of him. However the game against Swansea is a very different affair.

It will be interesting to see who Swansea play up front. They have recently been starting young Scotsman Oliver McBurnie as the lone striker. If they do that then it really doesn’t matter who Liverpool play at center back. He is no threat.

Instead they will either go for the pace of on-loan Tammy Abraham or the battering ram of Wilfred Bony. Seeing as Liverpool will not know until the team sheets are released it makes most sense to go with Joel Matip. The Cameroonian is the most able to adapt to either threat.

I am still hoping we will see Joe Gomez at center back sooner rather than later. However the purchase of Virgil van Dijk and the continuing absence of Nathaniel Clyne make that very improbable this season.

The good thing is that Klopp now has five healthy options for this position meaning he can rotate and game plan exactly how he wants to.
