Jurgen Klopp made three changes from the side that lost to Swansea on Monday. Simon Mignolet came in for Loris Karius as the two have swapped league and cup duties. Trent Alexander-Arnold made his first start in four games. The big surprise was that Alberto Moreno was fit enough to start at left back after feeling pain in his ankle this week.
It looked to be a dream start for Liverpool after a Jonny Evans mistake let Mohamed Salah in before the ball fell to Roberto Firmino. His delicate chip nestled into the net. But one minute later parity was restored by Jay Rodriguez who had far too much space to score from the edge of the box.
Rodriguez bagged another after West Brom cut through the Reds marshmallow defense. Then there were two controversial uses of VAR technology. The first was a disallowed goal for West Brom for offside on Gareth Barry. The second was a tug on Salah that was missed that led to a penalty that Firmino missed.
A catastrophic defensive series led to Craig Dawson scoring just before the half. Salah’s late goal was not enough to inspire a comeback.
