Liverpool are learning their lesson by handing out mega contracts to star players Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah.

This season has been a huge success for the progress of Liverpool’s attack. As of Valentine’s Day the Reds have scored 99 goals in all competitions. That is a good for an entire season. There are 11 Premier League games and one (likely three) Champions League games still to come.

The 5-0 evisceration of Porto, away from home, highlights how good the attack is right now. The addition of Mohamed Salah has taken the unit to a whole new level of efficiency and productivity. Even the loss of Philippe Coutinho in January is not slowing down the Reds. They have put up 20 goals in the eight games since the Brazilian left.

Now the trio of Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane must be rewarded with new contracts and more money. The first contract up is for Mane who will see a huge boost in his weekly earnings and keep him past his 2021 deal to cover the whole of the prime of his career.

Firmino will be next with the player wanting to commit to his long-term future to the Reds. There is already talk of doubling Salah’s reported £100k-a-week deal to put him at the top of the club’s salary structure with Firmino.

This commitment to sign and reward star players is a welcome lesson learned. While Coutinho was signed to a big deal it was not enough to sway him to Barcelona. The club have left it too late to sign Emre Can to a new deal and will lose him for nothing in the summer.

The new deals don’t simply put off potential suitors to Liverpool’s star players; they also inspire the rest of the squad and potential signings. They make it clear that if you do well at Anfield you are going to get paid handsomely. And about time too!
