Liverpool fans are overjoyed as Sadio Mane has been named the Champions League Player of the Week.

In an online vote, Mane was handed the award after beating off competition from Edin Dzeko, Mario Mandzukic and Arjen Robben. Read through the piece to see how Reds fans have reacted to the news!

During both quarter-final legs against Manchester City, the Senegal international hit the back of the net once during the home fixture and played the full 90 minutes at the Etihad.

Mane was also named man of the match at Anfield, and had an excellent game against the Citizens away from home.

That doesn’t really compare that favourable to the exploits of Dzeko and Mandzukic, although it definitely beats 34-year-old Robben.

Former City man Dzeko scored in both legs of their outstanding win against Barcelona and was awarded the MOTM in the second round of that game, while Mandzukic scored twice as Juventus came so close to upsetting Real Madrid.

But ultimately it came down to an internet vote, and everyone knows those are won mainly on who can mobilise their fan base the best.

At the start of the season, Salah was winning them left, right and center thanks to his Egyptian army of followers – although nobody would begrudge him those accolades now.

Looking at it from an impartial point of view, does Mane really deserve the glory? Dzeko would be feeling hard done by for sure as he inspired his side to a famous from-behind win.

But who cares? Mane is one of ours and every bit of silverware should be celebrated. Hopefully they’ll be plenty more of those to come, this season and in the future.
