Liverpool are being touted for a transfer move for Mario Götze from Borussia Dortmund reuniting him with former boss Jürgen Klopp at Anfield.

No, you haven’t travelled back in time to 2013. Liverpool are once again being linked to German midfield playmaker Mario Götze who is at Borussia Dortmund. There was a time when this rumor would appear every few weeks but this time it has come around because of speculation in the German media.

Leading German paper Bild.de is saying that Götze needs the influence of former manager Jürgen Klopp to reignite his stalling career. While this looks like baseless speculation it does make a lot of sense for both player and Liverpool.

Götze was a teenage phenomenon under Klopp at Dortmund. The Liverpool manager introduced him to the BVB first team as an 18-year-old and was a crucial part of the side that Klopp took the Champions League final in 2013.

The midfielder was sold that summer to Bundesliga rivals Bayern Munich who met his £35 million release fee clause. Klopp was gutted to lose the player he developed to Pep Guardiola at Bayern.

That move did not work out for Götze despite a very strong first season. He was a fixture in Guardiola’s side in 2013/14 that was capped with scoring the winning goal for Germany in the 2014 World Cup final.

Since then things have gradually declined for him. Two average seasons in Munich saw him lose his place in the side and transferred back to Dortmund. Last year he was diagnosed with Myopathy, a muscular disorder.

If Götze can prove his fitness then perhaps a reunion with Klopp at Liverpool would be good for everyone. Liverpool need some midfield and attacking reinforcements after selling Philippe Coutinho in January. His health concerns and lack of regular first team football would also keep the cost from being prohibitive. One to watch this summer.
