Liverpool could repeat history by signing Yaya Toure on a free transfer from Manchester City according to the rumors from one ex-Red today.

In the summer of 2013 Liverpool made a move for Kolo Toure who was available on a free transfer after being released by Manchester City. History could be repeating itself this year when Liverpool bring in his brother Yaya Toure who has been released by Man City this summer, at least according to one former Liverpool midfielder.

Ex-Red David Thompson claims to have heard confirmation that Liverpool will be signing Yaya Toure as a replacement for Emre Can.

While this is not an official source it is likely that Thompson has better contacts around Liverpool Football Club than the average Twitter ITK account!

More from Rush The Kop

Yaya Toure turned 35-years-old this week and only featured in ten Premier League games for the runaway league champions. He won three league titles, one FA Cup and three league cups during his time in Manchester to add to the two La Liga titles and one Champions League winner’s medal he picked up in Barcelona.

He is hardly in his prime but perhaps he could come in and bring some vital cover in an area of the pitch where injuries (Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain) and departures (Philippe Coutinho and Emre Can) leave Liverpool short on numbers and options.

Toure would also bring in experience of winning and sustaining a league challenge. Perhaps also give insider info into how to topple Manchester City nest season. Though Jurgen Klopp seems to already have Pep Guardiola’s number after three straight victories against them.

At this point I rate the transfer as unlikely – he is too old and would want too much money that he could find in Dubai, China or the MLS. However is this one does happy then I will be happy to have another Toure at the club and excuse to bust out this song!
