Liverpool full back Trent Alexander-Arnold has been unfairly snubbed by Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho as he hails their new signing.

Managers are going back their players. They are especially going to laud their new signings. Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has taken that to an absurd level with his claims about their club’s latest signing; throwing shade at Liverpool right back Trent Alexander-Arnold in the process.

Man Utd have just signed 19-year-old Porto right back Diogo Dalot for £19 million. The signing was accompanied by all the usual platitudes to a player’s quality. But Mourinho then went and tagged this ludicrous comment at the end of his statement:

More from Rush The Kop

“In his age group, he is the best full-back in Europe and we all believe he has a bright future ahead of him at Manchester United.”

The best full-back in Europe for his age? I mean he has really impressed over the course of his *checks stats* seven game career. Yes. Seven first team appearances makes him the best.

There are a handful of clearly better players out there in his age bracket. Off the top of my head: Benjamin Henrichs of Bayern Leverkusen., Ryan Sessegnon of Fulham and Liverpool’s very own Trent Alexander-Arnold.

I am not saying Trent is the best in the world for his age – though I think you can argue it – but he is light years ahead of Diogo Dalot. The Liverpool youngster has 40 first team appearances, three goals and two assists. He is also going to the World Cup this summer with England.

While Mourinho’s comments are clearly clueless perhaps he can be forgiven. After all he has been playing Luke Shaw and Ashley Young at full back this season. If that is what you are used to watching then the sight of mildly competent 19-year old defender probably does look like the best in the world!
