Portuguese outfit Sporting CP are in unprecedented turmoil and this is how Liverpool could profit.

Sporting could face an absolute crisis. Not a hyperbolic football crisis, but a real world crisis that may threaten the fabric of their club.

Goalkeeper and skipper Rui Patricio has resigned from the team. Not from his captaincy, but from the side. And this could open the floodgates and allow their biggest names, such as Gelson Martins and William Carvalho to follow.

This has happened because of an incident in which players were attacked at their training ground, and some like Bas Dost, sustained light injuries. Patricio then claimed his safety at work was under threat, which enabled him to walk away from his deal. He is now available on a free transfer.

Statsbomb.com has now reported that Martins and Carvalho could do the same. Both are highly prized assets. During the January transfer window, it was even reported that Liverpool had agreed terms with Martins, who is an explosive winger.

But even if they don’t break their contracts, the pair could put enough pressure on the embattled CP president that he allows them to be snapped up by interested sides. This means that Jurgen Klopp could pick up a gem of a player, in a position that needs strengthening, for a fraction of his true cost.

The 23-year-old has played 18 times for Portugal, he comes with Champions League experience and can operate on the right or through the middle. A return of eight goals and nine assists from 31 league games indicates a player with clear potential.

He’s informed his club that he intends to break his deal, as per Sky Sports, and this is a serious chance to make the most of an opportunity that won’t come back around. Klopp and the Anfield hierarchy should grasp it.
