Liverpool will play a patient game with the transfer of Nabil Fekir and use the interest from Chelsea and Spurs to determine his market value.

If Liverpool were offered Nabil Fekir for 50p on a minimum wage of £7.20 an hour they would take it no questions. We all know this. While the Reds are currently out of the running for the Lyon captain there is a price where Liverpool will be drawn back in; we just have to work out what that is.

One way to do that is to allow the transfer market to help set the value. We know that Chelsea and Spurs retain an interest in the French World Cup midfielder. Real Madrid are also monitoring the situation.

We also know that Lyon want to trade him; cash in on him while he is still a hot property – and before his knee troubles him again.

Clearly the £44 million investment – rising to £48 million with add-ons – was far too much of a risk to place on a knee that was badly injured in 2015 and had surgery as recently as January 2018.

The player is dead set on leaving. He knows all too well the short life span and limitations of a professional football career. He wants to go and taste Champions League football at a top European club and play in one of the best domestic leagues.

It is very difficult to work out where the threshold for value would be in this transfer. But it is worth remembering that every transfer is a risk. You have to weigh up the player’s talent and potential and then associate it with a financial figure. Any of those players can bust a knee in training or get cancer. That’s the risk with all of them, not just Nabil Fekir.

Perhaps Spurs or Chelsea will help drive down the price by putting in a low ball offer. At least that would help the Reds judge his true market value in the light of his medical status.
