Liverpool miss out on one of their long-term transfer targets but that could open up the way to resurrect the move for Lyon forward Nabil Fekir.

If you are anything like me then you are still holding out a lone candle with the remote hope that Liverpool may actually resurrect the deal for Lyon midfielder Nabil Fekir. After the transfer was nixed due to concerns over his knee there has been much discussion among the Reds’ fanbase as to whether or not this deal is dead or just in hibernation until after the World Cup.

There is one story from the last 24 hours that may just reignite your hopes that Liverpool can return to Fekir before this transfer window is out.

More from Rush The Kop

Liverpool Football Club have had their eyes on the talent at Olympic Lyonnaise recently. One of the players they were hoping to sign is French Under-21 star Houssem Aouar. The Reds have been tracking him for over a year and were hoping to sign him last summer.

However, he has just signed a new 5-year deal at Lyon. That is bad news for any hope of signing him but it does give a boost to the notion that Nabil Fekir will indeed leave this transfer window. The Ligue 1 side view Houssem Aouar as the natural successor to Nabil Fekir who is their captain and playmaker.

It certainly suggests there is hope on Lyon’s side of the table that a deal can be done. The noises coming from France are that they want to sell him. The question is: do they just want to cash in on a valuable player or are they also harboring worries over the long-term prognosis of his knee?

The club have stated through local journalists there is very unlikely to be any transfer activity before the World Cup finishes. However that is only 10 days away and so we may start to see some more solid transfer news appear over the next few days.
