Liverpool maintain an interest in signing Nabil Fekir in a huge transfer this summer despite the deal’s earlier collapse. Does the past hold the key to the future of this move?

Nabil Fekir has been linked with a summer move to Liverpool for the past couple of months. Prior to the start of the World Cup the club even appeared to be on the cusp of getting the deal over the line.

If rumors are to be believed, issues with Fekir’s medical are attributed as the reason for the deal failing to get over the line at the 11th hour. Since then, the links refuse to go away and major news outlets have continued to report the ongoing interest in recent weeks.

On July 1st, ESPN and newspaper The Mirror confirmed that Liverpool are considering a second approach for Fekir before the end of the transfer window. Although far from concrete, the persistence of the rumors does appear to lend some weight to the notion.  However, do Liverpool’s past transfer dealings hold the real key to the outcome of this saga?

It’s January 2013, Liverpool have just signed Daniel Sturridge from Chelsea for an “undisclosed fee” believed to be around £12m. A relatively modest fee even five years ago.

Despite the excitement of signing a player that all indications suggested could thrive up front for a big club, such was his goal/game ratio in the Premier League, the clouds of lingering doubt followed the player to Merseyside.

Talent has never been the question with Sturridge. He’s a clinical striker, capable of producing at the highest level. Unfortunately, his body has not been able to withstand the rigors of top-level professional football. The niggling injuries that frustrated him through years past have increased exponentially to the point of near constant concern.

It’s no secret that the former Chelsea man’s time in Liverpool appears to be all but over. What is intriguing however, is the amount of influence his tenure at Anfield may well be having on the potential signing of Nabil Fekir from Lyon…
