Liverpool transfer news: Danny Ward part of Liverpool transfer politics

Danny Ward will be given a chance in pre-season to become Liverpool’s new first choice keeper. At least, that’s the story Jurgen Klopp is pushing at the moment.

Earlier this week, The Liverpool Echo released a story expressing that Klopp is set to give Ward a fair opportunity to prove himself.

In reality, few believe that Ward has the quality required to be the club’s number one. Klopp is probably also one of those that don’t think he’s good enough.

Ward was refused a loan to Huddersfield Town this time last season. Klopp had a full year to evaluate the stopper, and played him for just one EFL Cup game.

It seems a stretch to believe that in the space of just a few weeks of pre-season training the Welshman has showed substantial improvements.

What is more likely is that he is simply the beneficiary of what is a disastrous goalkeeping situation at Liverpool. The club have very few alternatives at the moment.

Klopp currently finds himself in a tough position, as Loris Karius has zero re-sale value. He is mentality shot and the road to redemption is extremely long, if it even exists at all.

In his present state, Karius simply can’t be trusted to start in a competitive game. The entire world knows that Liverpool are desperate to sign a keeper, and this makes it very much a sellers market.

By publicly stating that Ward is good enough to be the Red’s goalkeeper, Klopp is attempting to dilute the impression that Liverpool are desperate.

If Ward can get through a couple of pre-season games without any major blunders, something Karius couldn’t muster, the fuel is their to help drive down prices.

As pre-season progresses, expect that this weeks comments highlighting the ability of Ward will not be Klopp’s last. The more believable it is that Liverpool could hand the reserve stopper the starting job the better.

Liverpool and the backroom staff have handled recent transfers very efficiently. The goalkeeping issue is too big and too important for them not to be addressing.
